We may suspect, perhaps, that those more privileged classes are not generally desirous that the interval were much less wide, provided that without cultivation of the lower orders the nuisance of their annoying and formidable temper could be abated.

"What did he do at this time?" "Set copies," "Looked over sums," and various other answers are perhaps given. The teacher makes a memorandum of this, and then inquires, "And what lesson came after this?" "Geography." "All the boys in this school who studied Geography may rise." A considerable number rise. "Did you all recite together?" "No, sir." "There are two classes, then?" "Yes. sir."

As a first result of such tall talking we find in America, more than in any other country, an inclination among all classes to leave the surroundings where they were born and bend their energies to struggling out of the position in life occupied by their parents. There are not wanting theorists who hold that this is a quality in a nation, and that it leads to great results.

This is true, of course, but, because some correct ideas were laughed at, it does not follow that whatever is laughed at is correct. It is lost sight of that as at Rome there were two classes, so there were two classes in Italy.

It was impossible to wear funeral robes on the eve of her second marriage; and the world had declared that she had shown an extraordinary degree of virtue in mourning so long for a death which every one considered so highly appropriate. Corona, however, felt differently. To her, her dead husband and the man she now so wholly loved belonged to two totally distinct classes of men.

There is, indeed, a too great divergence between the economic conditions of the most and the least favored classes in the community. But even that divergence has now come to the point where we bracket the very poor and the very rich together as the least fortunate classes. Our efforts may well be directed to improving the status of both.

While in garrison at this place, he lodged with Professor Lombard, a teacher of mathematics, whom he sometimes assisted in his classes. He worked hard, kept out of debt, ate little, and was "poor, but proud."
