There are fine old houses scattered all through the old thirteen states that cannot be surpassed for dignity and simplicity. One of the best halls in America is that of "Westover," probably the most famous house in Virginia. This old house was built in 1737 by Colonel Byrd on the James River, where so many of the Colonial aristocrats of Virginia made their homes.

"I know, Tony, that Roxanne and I are just children and what is worse, just girls but I have to do what I think is honorable under these circumstances; and taking friendliness from Roxanne now would be just charity I can't do it." As I spoke I felt my head straighten itself after the manner of the grandmother portrait, just as if I had been born a Byrd.

Allen in his "Cottage Home," at Mt. Byrd, growing weaker in body day by day, but with no very acute suffering. Everything that devoted love on the part of his family and church could suggest for his comfort was done; and there were not wanting from abroad many tokens of undying affection, as it became generally known that he was gradually but surely passing away.

And with his long needle Sam began rapidly to draw the gaping wound together. "Here, Byrd, you hold Jude," I said, suddenly; and giving the halter to the dirty fledgling, who was snubbing tears in his distress over the accident to his old friend, I quit the scene of the operation and fled to the woods to faint down on a log and be as ill as I wanted to.

Green moss overspread it. Brambles linked arms across it. "They are not here. We are on the wrong way," cried Maria Angelina and turned startled eyes on the young man. Johnny Byrd refused to take alarm. "They must have crossed the river farther back that's the answer," he said easily. "We went past the right crossing probably just after the storm.

If her judgment confirms mine, as I feel sure it will, we will mail you a cheque to-night, Mrs. Byrd according to our friend McEwan's instructions " and he smiled. Mary blushed with pleasure, and again rose to go, with an attempt at thanks. The telephone bell had twice, with a mere thread of sound, announced a summons. The editor took up the receiver.

Byrd, but we've shorely missed you," she answered, with something less than her usual wholehearted smile. "Well, you must rejoice, now that the prodigal has returned," he grinned. "Mary, you haven't answered my question yet when are you coming in to see the picture? Why not to-morrow? I'm dying to show it to you." She flushed. "I can't come, Stefan; it's impossible to leave Baby so long."

Most eighteen-year-old men would have resented having a motherless little brother and a long-legged girl neighbor eternally at their heels, but Sam never had; or, if he did, he gently kicked the Byrd and me out of the way, and we never knew that was what he was doing. We even loved him for the kicks.

Patents were easily obtained, but they did not become effective until the land was "settled" by clearing and cultivating a minimum tract. For a poor man this was the chief obstacle to acquiring a great estate; but a rich man was often able to avoid it altogether. In 1688, Byrd secured a patent for 3313 acres. He failed to "settle" it and the title lapsed.

Of the piece of dark loveliness whom the Virginian had brought forward to present, who could think otherwise? But his Excellency was a formal man, punctilious, and cautious of his state. The bow with which he received the strange lady's curtsy had been profound; in speaking to her he had made his tones honey-sweet, while his compliment quite capped the one just paid to Mistress Evelyn Byrd.
