Frequently we would just get on our bunk when a call to arms would be given; every man would rush out in a hurry and sometimes had to march four or five miles, before stopping, through rain and wind, or whatever weather we might be called out in. There we would stay the balance of the night. If we wanted to lie down we only had one blanket to put on the wet ground.

At one end of the hut there was a bed-place, big enough for two; it was variously termed a crib, a shelf, a tumble-in, and a bunk. Its owner called it a "snoosery." This was a model of plainness and comfort. It was a mere shell about two and a half feet broad, projecting from the wall, to which it was attached on one side, the other side being supported by two wooden legs a foot high.

The cabin door opened and a Mentorian said irritably, "Please lie down and fasten your straps. I haven't all day." Hastily Bart flushed the toilet and went to the bunk. Now everything that could identify him as Bart Steele was on its way to the breakdown tanks.

As the emissary heard him, he concluded that it was the guard come to release him, and sprang from his bunk just as Locke entered. He suspected nothing until a stray ray of light fell on Locke's face. But then it was too late either for him to put up much of a fight or to make an outcry.

And these words, which the poor fellow had in no sense mistaken, comforted him always, became part of his joy as he rode there, under those piercing stars, to look after her little ones. He found them sleeping in their bunks, the baby tight in Kitty's arms, the little boy above them in the upper bunk, with his hand in the long hair of his brown spaniel.

Then I started to slide one foot over the edge of the bunk, always with my eyes on that shadow. Now I swear I didn't make the sound of a pin dropping, but I had no more than moved a muscle when that shadowed thing twisted itself around in a flash and there on the floor before me was the profile of a man's head, upside down, listening a man's head with a tail of hair."

But the other was not to be persuaded; he was determined to win. Then Lindström let go, tore off his braces he had no time for more and dived head first into his bunk. Stubberud tried to protest; this was not fair, he was not undressed, and so on. "That doesn't matter," replied the fat man; "I was first, all the same."

But the evidence is all the other way. We would surely have caught him if he had been on any of the New York trains. I believe he's about here and means mischief yet." "If he's about here, there's no doubt about the mischief." "I'm going down to-night to bunk on the Sea Gull. Aleck let the men off, to go to a sailor's dance over on one of the islands.

"And just about that time Song gets up to cook for the boys in the bunk house who get out to relieve the night watch in the big pasture. Doesn't he?" "Those are the orders." "Then have Song in, and we'll ask him if he saw a strange man around the place when he got up. He might have seen him and thought nothing of it, and would never think of reporting it." "Good idea.

"It's been fine and dandy up aloft there, but I notice that when it doesn't make a fellow hungry it does make him good and sleepy." "All right, we'll bunk down, Hiram. I don't think any one is likely to run across us in this out-of-the-way place." "I don't think so, either," responded Hiram, and was soon asleep and snoring. The breakfast programme of the previous morning was repeated later.
