Katherine and Lucy walked in, arms twined about each other's waists. They were a pretty pair of school girls in their short bright gingham dresses, ruffled white aprons and white stockings and tennis shoes. Hair in two braids, broad-brimmed flower-wreathed hats and school knapsacks swinging from the shoulder completed their simple but effective costumes.

It was not easy for them to bring forth their breadths and their linings, and their braids that were to be pieced, and their trimmings that were to be turned, and to lay bare to other eyes all their little economies of contrivance; but Miss Craydocke managed it by simple straightforwardness, by not behaving as if there were anything to be glossed over or ignored.

And she did not turn, did not move.... He knew! He put his fingers on her cheek, her neck, the shining braids of her coarse black hair. Then he walked quickly out of the house, out of the village, toward the desert. Two men joined him. One of them said: "I have just died."

After watching her for about two hours one morning as she sat before her mirror directing her maid to arrange and re-arrange her hair in different styles in delicate puffs and curls and straying rings soft bands and loops in braids and coils he broke forth into an uneasy short laugh and expressed himself though she did not know he was expressing himself and would not have understood him if she had.

"Mind telling?" she inquired lightly. Peter looked at her speculatively. "And would a man be telling his heart's best secret to a kid like you?" he asked. "Now, I call that downright mean," said Linda. "Haven't you noticed that my braids are up? Don't you see a maturity and a dignity and a general matronliness apparent all over me today?" "Matronliness" was too much for Peter.

This defect was usually covered with an elaborate pile of braids and puffs; but occasionally the slippery surface of her bald crown and the power of gravitation proved too much for her hair-pins, and the whole structure slipped backward, to reveal a shining expanse of milk-white skin, gleaming forth from the dark tresses surrounding it.

I asked the third time; and with nothing but the parting of her hair for me to look at, she nodded, and one of her braids fell over in front, and I took the pink-ribboned live end of it timorously between thumb and finger and felt as if I had hold of an electric battery. She backed half a step, and quite needlessly I let it go.

Redding, in his shirt sleeves, was leading Australia by the hand; the little girl wore a red-flannel petticoat, and over her face and hands and to the full length of her flaxen braids ran sticky streams of bright green paint. Involuntarily, Lucy looked at Redding for explanation, and they both laughed. "Ain't it lucky it was the back of her head 'stid of the front?" said Mrs.

Their coarse hair hung in heavy braids; their bright little eyes twinkled in square faces scrubbed until they shone like copper. "Captain," said Russell to Brotherton, as the men followed the host into the supper room, "let us buy a ranch, marry two of these stunning girls, and lie round in hammocks whilst these Western houris bring us aguardiente and soda.

He opened it softly and stepped into the tiny square entry that he recalled so well the one through which the Sunday-School children ran out to the steps from their catechism, apparently enjoying the sunshine after a spell of orthodoxy; the little entry where the village girls congregated while waiting for the last bell to ring they made a soft blur of pink and blue and buff, a little flutter of curls and braids and fans and sun-shades, in his mind's eye, as he closed the outer door behind him and gently opened the inner one.
