How can anything better be expected from a mere soldier, a rough practical man, untrained in the arts of research, in collecting facts on slips of paper and arranging and re-arranging them till an induction emerges, in looking up reference books in libraries and 'listing' them in a neat alphabetical bibliography, totally ignorant of the Hilfswissenschaften, the laborious subsidiary studies on the basis of which scientific history is built up, ignorant even of foreign languages, who has read no sociology, and is not even aware of its existence, whose geographical studies are limited to his own journeys and the tales of his friends, who, finally, has the impertinence to intersperse his narrative with fictitious speeches, thus destroying any pretence at a scientific character for his treatise, and revealing it in its true nature as a mere work of art or imagination?

The coins introduced in America bear the dates 1722 and 1723, and are now much sought after by collectors. They are known as the Rosa American coinage. A list of the poems and pamphlets on Wood, during the excitement in Dublin, attending on the Drapier's Letters, will be found in the bibliography of Swift's works to be given in vol. xi. of this edition. See also Monck Mason's "History of St.

And even there, he believes, death never follows tarantula bite unless the subject is in a depleted state of resistance from blood-disease or other cause. Under the heading "Fatal Spider Bite" there is a considerable and interesting newspaper bibliography. The details do not analyze well.

I have not seen the book. Ascribed to Mrs. Haywood in the advertisements of her additional Works, 1727. The B.M. copy, catalogued under "Ariel," contains only a fragment of 24 pages. Miss M.P. Conant, The Oriental Tale in England in the Eighteenth Century , passim. The "key" is almost the sole contribution to Mrs. Haywood's bibliography in Bohn's Lowndes.

This edition includes all but the twelfth tablet, which was published by Haupt in the Beiträge zur Assyriologie, i. 48-79. For other publications of Haupt on the Gilgamesh epic, see the Bibliography, § 6. The identification with the Biblical Nimrod is now definitely abandoned by scholars, though the picture drawn of Nimrod is influenced by the traditions regarding Gilgamesh. See p. 515.

BIBLIOGRAPHY. Apart from the works already mentioned see generally: Scheibner, "Über die Herrschaft der frz. ANGLO-SAXON CHRONICLE. It is usual to speak of "the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle"; it would be more correct to say that there are four Anglo-Saxon Chronicles.

This was the power that France used to support her in the struggle with England for the Northwest. The trader used his influence to promote peace between the Northwestern Indians. The date rests on inference; see Bibliography of Nicolet in Wis. Hist. Colls., XI., and cf. Rels., 1660; Wis. Hist. Colls., X., XI; Narrative and Critical Hist. Radisson, 173-5, and Jes. Hist. Jes. But putting this aside, Un Grand Homme de Province a Paris must be ranked, both for comedy and tragedy, both for scheme and execution, in the first rank of his work. The bibliography of this long and curious book almost the only one which contains some verse, some of Balzac's own, some given to him by his more poetical friends occupies full ten pages of M. de Lovenjoul's record.

Young's Farmer's Letters first appeared in 1767; his Tours in the Southern, Northern, and Eastern Counties in 1768, 1770, and 1771; his Tour in Ireland in 1780; and his Travels in France in 1792. A useful bibliography, containing a list of his many publications, is appended to the edition of the Tour in Ireland edited by Mr. A. W. Hutton in 1892. Annals, xv. 166. Travels in France , p. 184 n.
