Theodor Wolff, the brilliant editor of the Berliner Tageblatt, with great daring for a German editor, raised this point in the edition in which the Ultimatum was printed. He asserted that the German people did not understand the case because they purposely had been left in the dark by the Government.

The critic of the 'Berliner Zeitung' asserted that Mark Twain is loved in Germany more than all other humorists, English or French, because his humour "turns fundamentally upon serious and earnest conceptions of life." It is a tremendously significant fact that the works of American literature most widely read in Germany are the works of striking conjunction! Ralph Waldo Emerson and Mark Twain.

The famous firm of Krupps, for instance, had its affairs closely interwoven with those of the Berliner Disconto Gesellschaft, and was more than once rescued from bankruptcy by its timely assistance. Similar help was afforded to the celebrated firm of Bauer which is known throughout the world for its synthetical medicines.

The two great papers that stand for peace and sanity, the Berliner Tageblatt and the Frankfurter Zeitung, with the Münchener Neueste Nachrichten, are read daily by more Germans than all the reactionary sheets combined. Our travellers order a measure of Berliner Weiss Bier, to be in keeping with the rest, and long for the hour of sleep. At length, a stout young man enters, carrying a lighted lantern, and in a loud voice of authority summonses all to bed.

"No wonder he looks enchanted at that wonderful creation of the Rue de la Paix." "He seems quite an exception to some husbands in that respect!" remarked the Berliner in deep gutturals. Sonia Turgeinov lighted a cigarette and blew the smoke at the flowers. There was a resentful cynicism in the act; she leaned back with greater abandon in her chair.

Young Roscius with the Tartar eyes stared at her. She threw away the smoking cylinder. "I'm off!" "Why " "Has not the curtain descended?" enigmatically. "I don't see any curtain," said the Frenchman. "No? But it's there." At the gate, however, once more she paused to listen, to laugh. "Was jetzt?" asked the mystified Berliner. She only shrugged.
