All below this developmental point is inconstancy of specific forms, with no line of ancestry to be traced anywhere. This, Professor Bastian readily concedes, notwithstanding it cuts the Darwinian plexus squarely in the middle.

Consequently, it is probable that new species have appeared from time to time with comparative suddenness, and that they still continue so to arise if all the conditions necessary for specific evolution now obtain. This probability will be increased if the observations of Dr. Bastian are confirmed by future investigation.

Professor Bastian is forced to go back of his infusorial forms and fungus-germs to a microscopical "pellicle," from which he admits they are "evolved." But why evolved? Does not the principle of vitality lie back of the pellicle, as well as the fungus-germ?

The signatures were procured, at great expense of time and labor, by Dr. E. B. Aveling and an eminent psychologist who desired to avoid publicity. Among them I find the following names: Admiral Maxse George Bullen C. Crompton, Q.C. George Du Maurier Charles Maclaren, M.P. George Dixon Dr. G. J. Romanes Henry Sidgwick. Dr. Charlton Bastian Herbert Spencer Dr. Edward Clodd Hon.

First of all our planet hung in the form of vapour, and drifted with millions of other similar clouds through space; then the vapour became liquid; then the globular form was assumed, and the flying ball began to rotate round the great attracting body. We cannot tell how living forms first came on earth; for they could not arise by spontaneous generation, in spite of all that Dr. Bastian may say.

Professor Bastian, in his great work on the "Beginnings of Life," has unhesitatingly said: "The 'vitalists' must give up their last stronghold we cannot even grant them a right to assume the existence of a special 'vital force' whose peculiar office it is to effect the transformation of physical forces. The notion that such a force does exist, is based on no evidence; it is a mere postulate.

The chorus limped to its end and the student left the coach to some curious reflections. "Eros anikate machan!" "Oh Love, unconquered in fight!" It sang in her ears persistently, joyously, ironically a wedding-song, a battle-song, a song of victory. Bastian Cautley was right when he said that the race was to the swift and the battle to the strong.

This fountain was made from the designs of Michel Colombe by his nephew, Bastian François.

It was the parings and trimmings of the human butcher shop, the horrible waste and refuse that ensues upon a day of slaughter, viewed in the cold, raw light of dawn. Bouroche, who, after a few hours of repose, had already resumed his duties, stopped in front of the wounded drummer-boy, Bastian, then passed on with an imperceptible shrug of his shoulders. A hopeless case; nothing to be done.

Lawrence hesitated as if not quite sure of the outcome of such unpremeditation. But Miss Barton questioned the gondolier. "The Buon Pesche that will be lovely; Bastian will paddle over and order the supper. We can walk around." So Lawrence, as if yielding against his judgment, knelt down and picked up her wrap.
