If a thought be purely intellectual and impersonal for example, if the thinker is attempting to solve a problem in algebra or geometry the thought-form and the wave of vibration will be confined entirely to the mental plane.

One of these tablets, eaten by a scholar after breakfast, would instantly enable him to understand arithmetic or algebra or any other branch of mathematics. Another tablet eaten after lunch gave a student a complete knowledge of geography. Another tablet made it possible for the eater to spell the most difficult words, and still another enabled him to write a beautiful hand.

I imagine this kind of thing will be the literature of the future a literature a l'Americaine, as different as possible from Greek art, giving us algebra instead of life, the formula instead of the image, the exhalations of the crucible instead of the divine madness of Apollo. Cold vision will replace the joys of thought, and we shall see the death of poetry, flayed and dissected by science.

This extreme case is nowhere realized except in the figures of arithmetic, and still more the symbols of algebra, a language unique in its kind, and approaching as nearly to perfection, for the purposes to which it is destined, as can, perhaps, be said of any creation of the human mind. Its perfection consists in the completeness of its adaptation to a purely mechanical use.

There will be a new church founded on moral science, at first cold and naked, a babe in a manger again, the algebra and mathematics of ethical law, the church of men to come, without shawms or psaltery or sackbut; but it will have heaven and earth for its beams and rafters; science for symbol and illustration; it will fast enough gather beauty, music, picture, poetry."

Among these we may mention one, viz., "The square of the hypothenuse of a right-angled triangle equals four times the area of the triangle, plus the square of the difference of the other two sides." This principle has been known to mathematicians by means of arithmetic and algebra, but has never before, we believe, been reduced to a geometrical demonstration.

Algebra was the easiest and at the same time the most accurate mode of conducting the intricate calculations arising out of the complicated question of food of flesh formers and heat generators that is to say, how much a sheep increased in weight by gnawing a turnip.

"It's no use!" she groaned. "You're not in a studying frame of mind, Joyce certainly not for geometry. I'll go over that myself Monday morning; but what you're going to do about it, I don't know and I don't much care! But we've got to get through somehow. Let's try the algebra. You always like that. Do you think you could put your mind on it?" "I'll try," grinned Joyce, in feigned contrition.

In the lowest class in the day-school there is one lower in the night-school the arithmetical tables are mastered, and fractions introduced and developed with the use of liquid, dry, surface, and time measures; whereas in the Senior class algebra is studied through quadratics and plane geometry through the "area of polygons."

Without waiting for the elevator he leaped the steps, three at a time, running up to the third floor, and thence down the corridor to No. 63 -his "home," and that of his chum, Ted Wainwright. Out of breath, he hurled himself into the room. Ted was crouched over the study table, algebra in front of him, cramming for an examination. "There you are! Hip, hurrah!"
