The first volume of the Voyage de Decouvertes contains numerous marginal references to charts not contained in the atlas issued with it. Freycinet's complete folio volume of charts was not published till 1812, five years after the issue of the book which they were necessary to explain.

Wellington at once resumed the offensive; Ciudad Rodrigo fell before him on January twelfth, 1812, and on April eighth, after one of the bravest and bloodiest assaults recorded in English annals, Badajoz also was carried. Marmont drew back for concentration, and the English advanced to the Duero.

In the 'Sixteenth Report of the Commissioners of the Caledonian Canal, the following reference is made to this important work, which was finished in 1812: "The depth of the mud on which it may be said to be artificially seated is not less than 60 feet; so that it cannot be deemed superfluous, at the end of seven years, to state that no subsidence is discoverable; and we presume that the entire lock, as well as every part of it, may now be deemed as immovable, and as little liable to destruction, as any other large mass of masonry.

James Madison, a Republican, became President, in 1809. The Indians, under Tecumseh, attacked the Western settlers, but were defeated at Tippecanoe by William Henry Harrison in 1811. In the same year, Congress determined to break with England. Clay and Calhoun led the agitation. Madison acceded, and war was declared June 18, 1812. The Treaty of Ghent was signed on December 24, 1814.
