My own demurs to these harsh judgments were not so many as they might have been. The idiocy I confessed; because, though positive that I was not uniformly an idiot, I felt inclined to think that, in a majority of cases, I really was; and there were more reasons for thinking so than the reader is yet aware of. But, as to the effeminacy, I denied it in toto; and with good reason, as will be seen.

The little girl wore a plain gingham dress and a checked sunbonnet, as she knew they were best fitted for travel. But Jack Pumpkinhead grew a lot of things in his garden besides pumpkins, so he cooked for them a fine vegetable soup and gave Dorothy, Ojo and Toto, the only ones who found it necessary to eat, a pumpkin pie and some green cheese.

But Daddy Tantaine excused himself on the plea that he had just been drinking. "That is all the more reason for being thirsty," remarked Toto. "My friends and I have drunk the contents of all these bottles since dinner." Tantaine raised his shabby hat at this semi-introduction, and the two roughs bowed smoothly.

There are some people, I am aware, who object to the institution in toto, arguing that it hurts the system with its unexpected shock, doing more harm than good. There are others who believe in nothing but shocks, and similar methods of treatment out of the common run; and these "go in" for shower-baths, "a discretion" though, without discretion, would, perhaps, be a truer description.

Champions of plain girls are not, however, wanting who boldly take the difficulty by the horns, and deny in toto the fact that in matrimony and love the race is usually to the beautiful. Look about you, they tell us, in the world, and you will as often as not find beauties fading on their stalks, and plain girls marrying on every side of them. And no doubt plain girls do marry very frequently.

"He shall have Christian burial in a few days," Malipieri said gravely. Toto shrugged his shoulders, not irreverently, but as if to say that when a dead man has been without Christian burial sixty years, it cannot make any difference whether he gets it after all or not. "The crowbar is still good," Toto said, stooping down to disengage it from the skeleton's grasp.

"Woof!" said Toto, and that meant "no." "Not just one word, Toto, to prove you're as any other animal in Oz?" "Woof!" "Just one word, Toto and then you may run away." He looked at her steadily a moment. "All right. Here I go!" he said, and darted away as swift as an arrow.

The old man got very cross as he at last perceived the missing lad conversing with the proprietor of a pie-stall, having evidently been doing a little jawing with him. "Toto," he called, "Toto, come here." Toto Chupin heard him, for he looked round, but he did not move, for he was certainly much interested in the conversation he was carrying on.

Any dog in my place would have made the same mistake. The creature was a toy-dog of one of those extraordinary breeds a prize-winner and champion, and so on, of course, and worth his weight in gold. I would have done better to bite the visitor than Toto. That much I gathered from the general run of the conversation, and then, having discovered that the door was shut, I edged under the sofa.

Toto knew at least that the vaults had then been entered from above, which was by far the easier way, but a new pavement had long ago covered all traces of the aperture. There was probably gold down there, gold of the ancients, in earthen jars.
