There is a reference to Osiander in De Subtilitate, p. 523. Cardan gives a full account of his relations with Osiander and Petreius in Opera, tom. i. p. 67. November 1536. Ferrari was one of Cardan's most distinguished pupils. "Ludovicus Ferrarius Bononiensis qui Mathematicas et Mediolani et in patria sua professus est, et singularis in illis eruditionis." De Vita Propria, ch. xxxv. p. 111.

Cardan writes of Brissac: "Erat enim Brissacus Prorex singularis in studiosis amoris et humanitatis." De Vita Propria, ch. iv. p. 14. "Mirumque in modum venenis cornu ejus adversari creditur." De Subtilitate, p. 315. De Vita Propria, ch. xxxiii. p. 105.

Here, perhaps, modern speculations about the constitution of matter may help us if we use them with due reserve to grasp Spinoza's notion of a "res singularis in actu" or as it might be rendered freely, "a creature of individual functions," for what is called the "vortex theory," though as old as Cartesian philosophy, has recently flashed into sudden prominence.

See, also, DR. THOLUCK'S remarks on the same point in the "Princeton Theological Essays," I. 555. MUSÆUS, "Tractatus Theologico-politicus ad veritatis lumen examinatus," 1674. REGNERI A MANSVELT, "Adversus anonymum Theologico-politicum, Liber singularis," 1674. FRANCOIS CUYPER, "Arcana Atheismi Revelata," 1676. JOHN BREDENBOURG, "Enervatio Tractatus Theol.-polit."

That whereby the Doctor either was deceived, or would deceive, appeareth to be this: That he taketh everything which agreeth to an individual thing to agree to it quo ad individuum, as if to speak of Peter quatenus est homo, and to speak of him quatenus est individuum signatum, or res singularis sub specie hominis, were all one thing.

With the possibilities of such a theory I have nothing to do. But the notion of the vortex in the ether may perhaps help us to a glimpse of Spinoza's notion when he speaks of a "res singularis in actu" a creature of individual functions. For to him man was, as it were, an infinitesimal vortex in a phase or attribute of the divine Substance.
