Hic et bella gerebat ut adulescens, cum plane grandis esset, et Hannibalem iuveniliter exsultantem patientia sua molliebat; de quo praeclare familiaris noster Ennius: unus homo nobis cunctando restituit rem; noenum rumores ponebat ante salutem; ergo plusque magisque viri nunc gloria claret. 11 Tarentum vero qua vigilantia, quo consilio recepit!

'If it shouldn't happen to fit, said Scadder, as he gave Martin the necessary credentials on recepit of his money, 'don't blame me. 'No, no, he replied merrily. 'We'll not blame you. General, are you going? 'I am at your service, sir; and I wish you, said the General, giving him his hand with grave cordiality, 'joy of your po-ssession.

Wherefore Francia, half dead with terror at the beauty of the picture, which lay before his eyes challenging comparison with those by his own hand that he saw around him, felt all confounded, and had it placed with great diligence in that chapel of S. Giovanni in Monte for which it was destined; and taking to his bed in a few days almost beside himself, thinking that he was now almost of no account in his art in comparison with the opinion held both by himself and by others, he died of grief and melancholy, so some believe, overtaken by the same fate, through contemplating too attentively that most lifelike picture of Raffaello's, as befell Fivizzano from feasting his eyes with his own beautiful Death, about which the following epigram was written: Me veram pictor divinus mente recepit; Admota est operi deinde perita manus.

CELSUS ALBINOVANUS was, like Florus, a friend of Tiberius, to whom he acted as private secretary for some time; he was given to pilfering ideas and Horace deals him a salutary caution: "Monitus multumque monendus Privatas ut quaerat opes, et tangere vitet Scripta Palatinus quaecunque recepit Apollo."

Notice recepit 'recovered', Tarentum having been lost by the Romans to Hannibal in 212 B.C. SENEM ADULESCENS: observe the emphasis given by placing close together the two words of opposite meaning. ERAT ... GRAVITAS: 'that hero possessed dignity tempered by courtesy'. Expressions like erat in illo gravitas are common in Cicero; e.g. Mur. 58 erat in Cotta summa eloquentia.

EUM ... RECEPIT: this clause has often been suspected to be an insertion of the writers of MSS. But the capture of Tarentum in 209 B.C. was Fabius' crowning achievement, and 'captor of Tarentum' was often added to his name as a title of honor; see De Orat. 2, 273; and there were several other persons of distinction bearing the name Q. Maximus about the same time, so that some special mark was wanted for the sake of clearness.
