Harvey we are all driven in the end, by those intuitive processes of reasoning which are hardly less conclusive than mathematical induction itself. We may call these "primordia viventium" plastide particles, bioplasts, vital units, or whatsoever we will, the name is nothing, the working process is everything.

Quale nempe primordium, ovum est et plantarum semen; tale etiam viviparorum conceptus, et insectorum vermis ab Aristotele dictus: diversa scilicet diversorum viventium primordia." The definition of a germ as "matter potentially alive, and having within itself the tendency to assume a definite living form," appears to meet all the requirements of modern science.

In the epic of primitive Rome the claims of art took precedence over personal creed, and so they would with any true poet; and if any critic were prosaic enough to object, Vergil might have answered with Livy: Datur haec venia antiquitati ut miscendo humana divinis primordia urbium augustiora faciat, and if the inconsistency with his philosophy were stressed he could refer to Lucretius' proemium.

No wonder that at a time of such turbulence fine society also should have shown the primordia of a great change. It was felt that the aristocracy could not live by good-breeding alone. The old delights seemed vapid, waxen. Something vivid was desired. And so the sphere of fashion converged with the sphere of art, and revolution was the result.

Just as we say: convene by their delegates, or representatives. Publice==publica auctoritate, cf. same word, 10. Primordia. Initiatory rites. Minor, sc. numine. Inferior to the god. Prae se ferens. Expressing in his external appearance, or bearing in his own person an acknowledgment of the power of the divinity. Evolvuntur==se evolvunt, cf.

It might be supposed that the attached base of the dorsal fin is unable to extend forward because the eye on the edge of the head is in the way, but if the metamorphosis is arrested, why should the fin grow forward in a free projection? I have suggested that the explanation here is that in the zygote the primordia of a normal body and a reversed head have been united together.

They are on the twelve constellations, a well-worn but apparently attractive subject: "Flumina verna cient obscuro lumine Pisces, Curriculumque Aries aequat noctisque dieque, Cornua quem comunt florum praenuntia Tauri, Aridaque aestatis Gemini primordia pandunt, Longaque iam minuit praeclarus lumina Cancer, Languiticusque Leo proflat ferus ore calores.

The particles of this "fire mist," as it is appropriately called, were the true primordia rerum, the elements of the universe, the principles of all the forms of inorganic matter and all organic things. At the outset, the Creator endowed these particles with certain qualities and capacities, and then stood aside from his work, as there was nothing farther for him to do.

It seems a narrow field that to which I find myself limited but, unless I am greatly deceived, it presents to us topics which will deserve careful consideration. First, then, let me say something of what led up to the election of 1783. In doing so I must go back to the primordia of the Church in this Diocese. Keith and Talbot had, indeed, preached at New London in 1702.

Stato tempore in silvam auguriis patrum et prisca formidine sacram, omnes ejusdem sanguinis populi legationibus coeunt, caesoque publice homine celebrant barbari ritus horrenda primordia. Est et alia luco reverentia.
