IV, c. 24. In the Ordo Romanus, besides the blessing of milk and honey, there is a formula of benediction of a lamb and other food. By C.M. Baggs. Having spoken of the blessing of the paschal candle at Rome, we may for a few moments turn our thoughts towards a city still more ancient, and trodden by holier and more exalted beings than even the apostles and martyrs of the eternal city.

Then induce them to meditate on the universals of Christian Faith on Christianity taken as the sum of belief common to Greek and Latin, to Romanist and Protestant. Show them that this and only this is the ordo traditionis, quam tradiderunt Apostoli iis quibus committebant ecclesias, and which we should have been bound to follow, says Irenaeus, si neque Apostoli quidem Scripturas reliquissent.

'Semper a patre, non a matre, generationis ordo texitur. Next, it is to be remarked, that no free woman can live in Lombardy, or, I believe, in any Teutonic state, save under the 'mundium' of some one. You should understand this word 'mund. Among most of the Teutonic races, women, slaves, and youths, at least not of age to carry arms, were under the mund of some one.

They have thus deprived their followers of the inestimable fruits of communion enumerated by Christ in the gospel yet these forsooth are the men who charge Catholics with a departure from primitive practice. See Act. Coer. p. 54. Martene t. 3, p. 132. It is found with little variation also in the Gelasian Sacramentary, in a very ancient Ordo Romanus, and some MSS. cited by Martene.

At the time when Master Pihringer came to dwell with us, Herdegen was already high enough to pass into the upper school, for he was first in his 'ordo'; but our guardian, the old knight Hans Im Hoff, of whom I shall have much to tell, held that he was yet too young for the risks of a free scholar's life in a high school away from home, and he kept him two years more in Nuremberg at the school of the Brethren of the Holy Ghost, albeit the teaching there was not of the best.

The good squire received him with his usual kindness, and informed him, according to that lucidus ordo which he so especially favoured, of the whole particulars of their excursion. As the party approached the brow of the hill, the view of the city below was so striking that there was a general pause for the purpose of survey.

Johann Joachim Becher, a German physician, well known for his books on chemistry, had composed a prayer which looked like getting him into trouble. It began: 'O sancta mater natura, aeterne rerum ordo'. And it ended by saying that this Nature must forgive him his errors, since she herself was their cause.

The twelve lessons or prophecies read on this day were intended for the instruction of the catechumens; and they are well selected for that purpose, as they contain an account of the creating, the flood, the obedience of Abraham, the deliverance of God's people from their enemies at the red sea, the precept concerning the paschal lamb, the conversion of Ninive, the refusal of the three children to adore Nabuchodonosor's statue, etc. they are twelve in the ancient Gelasian Ordo.

"Do with me what you please: I shall not prove a traitor: if the Romans had courage, so have I to say 'longus post me ordo idem petentium decus." "Get you hence," brawled the director; and the pedellus led me away. Two hours afterwards they told me I might go home; I was saved. Just that implacable director had proved himself the best in his efforts to rescue us.

Martene lib. 4, c. 28. In the Ordo Romanus also De Benedictione Ecclesiæ these invocations are found. The question however concerning their antiquity in the litanies is of minor importance.
