We are Christians in name alone. Why does a classic proverb sound better to us than a quotation from the Bible: corchorum inter olera, 'chick-weed among the vegetables', better than 'Saul among the prophets'? As a sample of the absurdity of Ciceronianism, he gives a translation of a dogmatic sentence in classical language: 'Optimi maximique Jovis interpres ac filius, servator, rex, juxta vatum responsa, ex Olympo devolavit in terras, for: Jesus Christ, the Word and the Son of the eternal Father, came into the world according to the prophets.

He thus described his triumph: Domum tanquam ex Olympo victorem primarii me comitantur. I ministri o i lor segretari ne faceano la minuta in ispagnuolo, ed egli le recava nella lingua che era allora adoperata come lingua internazionale.

In this second edition of Van Twiller's fatuity, his case was even worse than before. He not only thought of Olympo quite a number of times between breakfast and dinner, he not only attended the interlude regularly, but he began, in spite of himself, to occupy his leisure hours at night by dreaming of her. This was too much of a good thing, and Van Twiller regarded it so.

Ne pueri ne tanta animis adsuescite bella, Neu patriae validos in viscera vertite viris; Tuque prior, tu parce, genus qui ducis Olympo, Projice tela manu, sanguis meus! We come finally to the two Eclogues addressed to Asinius Pollio. This remarkable man was only six years older than Vergil, but he was just old enough to become a member of Caesar's staff, an experience that matured men quickly.

The poem recalls the words of Anchises on beholding the spirits of Julius and Pompey: Tuque prior, tu parce, genus qui ducis Olympo Proice tela manu, sanguis meus. Ad Att. This is the poet's final conviction regarding the civil war in which he served; his first had not differed widely from this.

The stanzas of Michele Ferno of Milan conclude: Borgia stirps: bos: atque Ceres transcendit Olympo, Cantabunt nomen sæcula cuncta suum; which turned out to be a true prophecy. See Michæl Fernus Historia nova Alexandri VI ab Innocentii obitu VIII; an equally rare publication of the same Eucharius Silber, A. 1493. Ex arce Spoletina, die v. Oct. Vr. vti fr. Delicate ladies lay down in the bottom of the boat in the throes of seasickness, and were literally washed to and fro, and saturated, as they said, to the heart. We landed, however, and I took passage up to Asuncion in the "Olympo." The "Olympo" is a palatial steamer, fitted up like the best Atlantic liners with every luxury and convenience.

Adsis o Cytherea: tuos te Caesar Olympo Et Surrentini litoris ara vocat. The poem has hitherto been assigned to a period twenty years later. But surely this youthful ferment of hope and anxiety does not represent the composure of a man who has already published the Georgics.

We may surmise that the death of Caesar, whose deeds seem to have brought the idea of such a poem to Vergil's mind, caused him to lay the work aside. Returning to the fourteenth Catalepton, we find what seems to be a definite key to the date and circumstances of its writing. The closing lines are: Adsis, o Cytherea: tuos te Caesar Olympo Et Surrentini litoris ara vocat.
