Now, the reason has been shown to be superindividual, generally, and therefore not less so when the form of an individualisation subsists in the alter than when it is confined to the idem; not less when the emotions have their conscious or believed object in another, than when their subject is the individual personal self.

N.D. 2, 156 neque enim serendi neque colendi, nec tempestive demetendi percipiendi que fructus, neque condendi nec reponendi ulla pecudum scientia est. IN ALIIS: see n. on 3 ceteris. Notice the proleptic use. IDEM: a better form of the plural than iidem, commonly found in our texts. For the use here cf. n. on 4 eandem. PERTINERE: present for future.

Is it the actual knowledge of IMPOSSIBILE EST IDEM ESSE, ET NON ESSE, that makes a child distinguish between its mother and a stranger; or that makes it fond of the one and flee the other? Or does the mind regulate itself and its assent by ideas that it never yet had? Or the understanding draw conclusions from principles which it never yet knew or understood?

There are social pleasures, family affections and fellowship, sympathy and co-operation in the struggles of life. And there is love. Omne adeo genus in terris hominumque ferarumque, Et genus aequoreum, pecudes, pictaeque volucres, In furias ignemque ruunt: amor omnibus idem.

V. SAEVIUS NICANOR first acquired fame and reputation by his teaching: and, besides, he made commentaries, the greater part of which, however, are said to have been borrowed. He also wrote a satire, in which he informs us that he was a freedman, and had a double cognomen, in the following verses; Saevius Nicanor Marci libertus negabit, Saevius Posthumius idem, sed Marcus, docebit.

Simply to back one's own view by a similar view derived from another, may be useful; a quotation that repeats one's own sentiment, but in a varied form, has the grace which belongs to the idem in alio, the same radical idea expressed with a difference similarity in dissimilarity; but to throw one's own thoughts, matter, and form, through alien organs so absolutely as to make another man one's interpreter for evil and good, is either to confess a singular laxity of thinking that can so flexibly adapt itself to any casual form of words, or else to confess that sort of carelessness about the expression which draws its real origin from a sense of indifference about the things to be expressed.

Between you and me there has been, I think, as much as possible between any two people, the 'idem velle, idem nolle et idem sentire de republica, and in consequence the 'firma amicitia. God bless you, and believe me always, Yours most sincerely and faithfully, C. C. G. From Lord Brougham I really begin to feel anxious about the peace of Europe, and not without some alarm as to our own position.

So it had been in the case of Semper Idem. The mystery of the man had not appealed to him, nor had his silence and the veiled romance which the yellow reporters had so sensationally and so fruitlessly exploited in divers Sunday editions. But Semper Idem's throat had been cut. That was the point. That was where his interest had centred.

See Mueller's Dorians, vol. ii. Aristot. Pol., lib. ii., c. 9. Idem. These remarks on the democratic and representative nature of the ephoralty are only to be applied to it in connexion with the Spartan people.
