What should you think of a lover who should describe the idol of his heart in the language of science, thus: Class, Mammalia; Order, Primates; Genus, Homo; Species, Europeus; Variety, Brown; Individual, Ann Eliza; Dental Formula 2-2 1-1 2-2 3-3 i -c -p -m 2-2 1-1 2-2 3-3' and so on?
Nor was this custom confined to these races, for, in the words of Cicero: Antiquissimum sepulturae genus id fuisse videtur, quo apud Xenophontem Cyrus utitur; redditur enim terrae corpus, et ita locatum ac situm, quasi operimento matria obducitur.
Both single species and whole groups of species last for very unequal periods; some groups, as we have seen, having endured from the earliest known dawn of life to the present day; some having disappeared before the close of the palæozoic period. No fixed law seems to determine the length of time during which any single species or any single genus endures.
