From the Preface to the Complete Works . Text according to the Berlin Edition of the Buchwald and others, Vol. I, pp. xi ff. Evidently a play on the Latin frigidus, often used in the sense of "trivial" or "silly"; so Luther refers to the "frigida decreta Paperum" in his Propositions for the Leipzipg Disputation . i. e. Frivolous mockers at holy things.

It was sold, perhaps to Palmerston, at Jett's auction in 1731. The gap between Henry VIII. and Stebbing remains for the present unfilled. So much for the first draw. Next, a yet larger and more ponderous volume, Decreta Romanorum Pontificum the Papal decretals and the Acts of the Councils.

"I shall not be better than my fathers." Cf. 1 Kings 19:4 Des Pabats Drecet and Drecketal. Luther makes a pun on decreta and decretalia the official names for the decrees of the Pope.

Trogus Pompeius was born in the neighborhood of Massilia, and in writing his forty-third book he obviously made use of native chronicles, for from no other source could he derive the account of the decreta honorifica of the Romans to the Massilians for the friendship which the latter had shown to the Romans during the Gallic war; and from the same source must he have obtained his information about the maritime wars of Massilia against Carthage.

The doctrine of fate, preached by Lucan as well as by Seneca in other places, is here inculcated with every variety of point. We quote a few lines from the Oedipus: Fatis agimur: cedite fatis. Non sollicitae possunt curae Mutare rati stamina fusi Quicquid patimur, mortale genus, Quicquid facimus venit ex alto; Servatque suae decreta colus Lachesis, dura revoluta manu.
