It has already been necessary to discuss this point briefly in "The Sexual Impulse in Women," vol. iii of these Studies. "Die Abstinentia Sexualis," Zeitschrift für Sexualwissenschaft, Nov., 1908. P. Janet, "La Maladie du Scrupule," Revue Philosophique, May, 1901. S. Freud, Sexual-Probleme, March, 1908.

This word, though sometimes denoting temperance in food and drink, more properly refers to the desire and use of money. Abstinentia is opposed to avarice; continentia to sensual pleasure. Cf. Plin. Epis. 6, 8: alieni abstinentissimus. Here render honesty, integrity. Cui indulgent. See the same sentiment, His. 4, 6: quando etiam sapientibus cupido gloriae novissima exuitur.

See Charles F. Dupuis, "Traite des Mysteres," ch. i. Pausan, Corinth, ch. 37. Clem, Prot. Eur. Bacch. See Porphyry, De Abstinentia, lii, Section 56. That Eucharistic rites were very very ancient is plain from the Totem-sacraments of savages; and to this subject we shall now turn.

Boadicea duce coepta, a Suet. Paullino compressa. Huic succedunt ignavi. 17. Rem restituunt Petilius Cerialis et Julius Frontinus; hic Silures, ille Brigantes vincit; 18. Agricola Ordovices et Monam. Totam provinciam pacat, et 19, 20. moderatione, prudentia, abstinentia, aequitate in obsequio retinet, 21. animosque artibus et voluptatibus mollit.

This is the kind of teaching which we find illustrated in the book of Valerius Maximus, which has already been alluded to, who takes some special virtue or fine quality as the subject of most of his chapters, fortitudo, patientia, abstinentia, moderatio, pietas erga parentes, amicitia, and so on, and illustrates them by examples and stories drawn mainly from Roman history, partly also from Greek.

Polybius indeed, writing about 140-130 B.C., declines to state positively that the great Romans were corrupt or extortionate, and those who were his intimate friends, Aemilius Paullus and his sons, were distinguished for their "abstinentia": but the mere occurrence of this word "abstinentia" in the epitomes of Livy's lost books which dealt with this time, betrays the fact too obviously.

While again Professor Murray says, "The polemic literature of Christianity is loud and triumphant; the books of the Pagans have been DESTROYED." De Abstinentia, ii. 56; iv. 16. Four Stages, p. 180.

And that is why his disrespectful pupil occasionally gives him the nickname of Cornaro! I have not time to see anything else in this volume than Abstinentia adjicit vitam; but this motto of the noble Venetian I have no intention of putting in practice, at least at breakfast time. There is no change in the order in which we sit down to table.

Chrysostome, speaking of such as are subject to bishops, saith, In potestate positum est obedire vel non. Liberty in things indifferent, saith Amandus Polanus, est per quam Christiani sunt liberi in usu vel abstinentia rerum adiaphorarom.
