El Trovador was given operatic form by the great Italian composer Giuseppi Verdi, and under its Italian title, Il Trovatore, is well known throughout the world.
From his works we can easily believe that both of these motives entered into it; in fact he says as much in his correspondence with the Duque de Sessa. Speaking of this phase of the poet's life, Fitzmaurice-Kelly says: "It was an ill-advised move. Ticknor, indeed, speaks of a 'Lope, no longer at an age to be deluded by his passions'; but no such Lope is known to history.
In Spain, La Hermana San Sulpicio and Los Majos de Cadiz, have won the greatest favor. These are both novels of Andalusian life. In the United States La Hermana San Sulpicio, María y María and Maximina are best known through the translations of Nathan Haskell Dole. More recent translations are: La Alegría del Capitán Ribot, by Minna Caroline White; and El Cuarto Poder, by Rachel Chalice.
Spain has done excellent work in prose fiction during the last fifty or sixty years past, but this work is little known outside of the Spanish-speaking countries. Even those people who are, for the most part, well read in the literatures of Europe are generally ignorant of recent Spanish fiction.
His genius is uneven, but when at his best Palacio Valdés is one of the most charming of modern novelists. His better known works are probably La hermana San Sulpicio and La alegría del capitán Ribot.
In enumerating the plays of Lope which were still well known and represented in Spain in the nineteenth century, Gil de Zárate names La Moza de Cántaro among the first, and doubtless on this authority Ticknor speaks of it as one of the plays of Lope which "have continued to be favorites down to our own times."
Armando Palacio Valdés was born in 1853 in the province of Asturias. He is one of the most prominent contemporary novelists of Spain. He belongs to that school of writers known as naturalists, and in the opinion of some, he deserves to stand at the head of that school. His novels treat of contemporary Spanish life.
