All game birds are becoming scarce as the country becomes settled and they are confined to uninhabited regions. NEBRASKA: Grouse, prairie chicken and quail. Whistling swan. NEW HAMPSHIRE: Wood-duck and upland plover.

White heron reported a number of times last year; occurrences in Sandusky, Huron, Ashtabula and several other counties during 1911. These birds would doubtless rapidly recruit under a proper federal law. OKLAHOMA: Pinnated grouse. OREGON: American egret, snowy egret. PENNSYLVANIA: Virginia partridge and woodcock. Wood-duck, least bittern, phalarope, woodcock, duck hawk and barn swallow. Chas.

Sage grouse, prairie and Columbian sharp-tailed grouse, trumpeter swan, Canada goose, in fact, most of the water-fowl. The sickle-billed curlew, of which there were many a few years ago, is becoming scarce. There are no more golden or black-bellied plover in these parts. W.R. Felton, Miles City. Sage grouse. Ptarmigan, wood-duck, sharp-tailed grouse, sage grouse, fool hen and plover.

All the water birds that are killed as game birds have been greatly reduced in numbers during the past 25 years. I have not seen a wood-duck in 5 years. The prairie chicken has entirely disappeared from this locality.

On Lake Agassiz, in the N.Y. Zoological Park, within 500 feet of my office in the Administration Building, a pair of wild wood-ducks made their nest last spring, and have just finished rearing nine fine, healthy young birds. Whenever you see a wood-duck rise and fly in our Park, you may know that it is a wild bird.

TEXAS: Wild turkey, passenger pigeon, ivory-billed woodpecker, flamingo, roseate spoonbill, American egret, whooping crane, wood-duck; bison, elk, mountain sheep, antelope, "a small, dark deer that lived 40 years ago." UTAH: Records insufficient. VIRGINIA: Records insufficient.

They are increasing. VERMONT: If all states afforded as good protection as does Vermont, none; but migrating birds like woodcock are now threatened. A few bears remain, and deer in small numbers in remote sections. In fact, all animals show great reduction in numbers, owing to cutting down forests, and constant gunning. WEST VIRGINIA: Wood-duck, wild turkey, northern raven, dickcissel.

How gently each has been deposited on the water! No violence has been used towards them yet, though, perchance, palpitating hearts were present at the launching. And painted ducks, too, the splendid wood-duck among the rest, often come to sail and float amid the painted leaves, barks of a nobler model still! What wholesome herb-drinks are to be had in the swamps now!

She must resolutely stop the sale of all wild game. She must stop the killing of female deer, and of bucks with horns under three inches long. She must stop killing gray squirrels and doves as "game." She should not permit the beautiful wood-duck to be killed as "game." She should accord a five-year close season to grouse, and all shore birds.

After resting awhile we proceeded on with the cart, tracing down the watercourse over a very rough and stony road on which the cart was upset, but without any serious damage, and passing several very large and fine water-holes with many teal and wood-duck upon them. At eight miles from where we lunched, we encamped with abundance of water, but very little grass.
