We unyoked our weary oxen beneath them, and sought such shelter as their branches would afford; but not a drop or sign of water was to be seen round them. It seemed surprising how they could exist in that arid spot. Fires were lighted to cook the remnant of our provisions, though they also had fallen very short.

Their quick glances, with a certain quality of wildness in the eyes, ranged over the three seated and silent whites. "Greeting, O white men from out the forest, and the water beyond, and the father of waters beyond that." The spokesman stepped forward.

I learned afterward that there were several moons in the service of this world, but the laws that ruled their times and different orbits I failed to discover. Choose small button mushrooms, clean and wipe them, and throw them into cold water, then put into a stewpan with a little salt, and cover them with distilled vinegar, and simmer a few minutes. Put them in bottles with a couple of blades or so of mace, and when cold, cork them closely.

Clover noticed now, for the first time, that these walks were several inches higher than the grass-beds on either side. She wondered if they were made so on purpose, and resolved to notice if the next place had the same arrangement.
