"You don't seem to be aware of the fact, Blake, that Binhart is dead dead and buried!" Blake stared up at him. "Is what?" his lips automatically inquired. "Binhart died seven weeks ago. He died in the town of Toluca, out in Arizona. He's buried there." "That's a lie!" cried Blake, sagging forward in his chair. "We had the Phoenix authorities verify the report in every detail.

Being again successful, he made Toluca the beneficiary of his princely liberality. The celebrated Cathedral of that city, and all its ornaments, are the proofs of his munificence.

With his pack-mule and a pick and shovel he set out, late one afternoon, for the Buenavista Camp. Yet by nightfall, for some strange reason, any one traveling that lonely trail might have seen him returning towards Toluca.

To all this amiable and erratic garrulity there seemed to be neither direction nor significance. But in one thing the town of Toluca agreed; the ponderous-bodied old new-comer was a bit "queer" in his head. A time came, however, when the newcomer announced that he could wait no longer for his belated camp-partner.

Laborde, the Frenchman who projected and established the magnificent garden at Cuarnavaca, and also built, from his private fortune, the great Cathedral of Toluca, made and spent two princely fortunes in successful mining, and at last ended his checkered career in poverty. The Countess Ruhl, the mother of young Galvez, and her brother the Count Ruhl, are also fortunate miners.

Half of General Marshall's force at Jalapa was sick, and he reported, December 22d, that he had sent his wagons back to Vera Cruz for medicines and other supplies. Pachuca was occupied without opposition by Colonel Jones M. He hugged to his breast the fact that somewhere in the world ahead of him a man once known as Binhart still moved and lived. He kept telling himself that somewhere about the face of the globe that restless spirit whom he sought still wandered.

''I do, Señora, at Toluca. ''How far is it from here? ''Twelve or fourteen leagues. Are you intimate enough with the family to take me there to-morrow, without previously informing them of my intention? ''Certainly; the lady I allude to is my sister. ''Then to-morrow morning early, at seven, say.

Military possession was taken of Cuernavaca, fifty miles south of the City of Mexico; of Toluca, nearly as far west, and of Pachuca, a mining town of great importance, some sixty miles to the north-east. Vera Cruz, Jalapa, Orizaba, and Puebla were already in our possession.

Among the numberless churches, a curious one will long be remembered, namely, the Santa Vera Cruz, the façade of which very much resembles that of a dime museum, having a lot of grotesquely-colored figures of saints standing guard. Toluca, notwithstanding its appearance of newness, is really one of the oldest settlements in the country, dating from the year 1533.
