After all the praises lavished on her for centuries by so many of her illustrious children, it was left for this foreigner, in the age of her decay, to pay her the most complete and most splendid eulogy: Quod regnas minus est quam quod regnare mereris; Excedis factis grandia fata tuis: Nam solis radiis aequalia munera tendis, Qua circumfusus fluctuat oceanus.

Four meals were held here. But what am I saying quo Musa Historiae tendis? dear! dear! I thought I was back again in the old times! a thousand pardons. Dinner was no longer dinner; there was "luncheon" to which nobody came except on Saturdays. Some people said it had gone to Prince's, but certainly the Owner never followed it there.

Joseph, clasping her with inexpressible eagerness, whispered her, "that he preferred death in hers to life out of them." Adams, brandishing his crabstick, said, "he despised death as much as any man," and then repeated aloud "Est hic, est animus lucis contemptor et illum, Qui vita bene credat emi quo tendis, honorem."

But quo musa tendis? I was talking about my travels in Brittany. I do not think my book was a bad coup d'essai.

Or may it not perhaps be truer to say that in such matters there is no such thing as mercy no special mercies no other mercy than that fatherly, forbearing, all-seeing, perfect goodness by which the Creator is ever adapting this world to the wants of His creatures, and rectifying the evils arising from their faults and follies?
