From the summit another rivulet trickles away to the south, and finds its way through a frightful tamarack swamp, and through woods scarred by ruthless lumbering, to Mud Pond, a quiet body of water, with a ghastly fringe of dead trees, upon which people of grand intentions and weak vocabulary are trying to fix the name of Elk Lake. The descent of the pass on that side is precipitous and exciting.

"Ef Samson was hyar, ye wouldn't dare " What else she might have said was shut off in stormy, breathless gasps of humiliation and anger. "Well," replied Tamarack, with drawling confidence, "ef Samson was hyar, I'd show him, too damn him! But Samson hain't hyar. He won't never be hyar no more." His voice became deeply scornful, as he added: "He's done cut an' run.

"People think," she said, "that 'the Dunes' means nothing beyond a regular row of sandhills following the edge of the water; yet half the interest and three-quarters of the variety are to be found in behind them. See my wide marsh, off to the southeast, with those islands of tamarack here and there, and imagine how beautiful the shadows are toward sunset.

He slipped back to his horse, mounted and rode fast to the house of Spicer South, demanding asylum. The next day came word that, if Tamarack Spicer would surrender and stand trial, in a court dominated by the Hollmans, the truce would continue. Otherwise, the "war was on." The Souths flung back this message: "Come and git him."

Point out to her that the trees above are some of them deciduous poplars, or maples, and others sombre groups of pines and silky tamarack with a wonder of delicate tracery.

The memory of that which she beheld now would be hers during the long, drear months of winter, a sheet anchor of hope, of joy, something to tell her always that, whatever might chance, life still held for her a priceless treasure of which it could never wholly rob her. Marcel released her hands lingeringly. "Here," he cried holding up the pieces of tamarack he had cut. "These darned bits of wood."

Then, again, the channel would sweep to one side of the marsh, and give view to wide vistas of high and rolling lands, dotted with groves of hardwood, with here and there a swamp of cedar or of tamarack. Little herds of elk and droves of deer fed on the grass-covered slopes, as fat, as sleek and fearless of mankind as though they dwelt domesticated in some noble park.

Whatever conclusion was reached as to the artist's future, he was, until the verdict came in, a visitor, and, unless liquor inflamed some reckless trouble-hunter, that fact would not be forgotten. Possibly, it was as well that Tamarack Spicer had not arrived. Lescott himself realized the situation in part, as he stood at the door of the house watching the scene inside.

Returning to the road we passed Jock Ellis's cabin, in a similar state of ruin to that of McKinney. He was a Squaw Valley stampeder. Nearby we saw the largest tamarack I have yet found in the Sierras. It was fully five feet through and fluted in an interesting and peculiar fashion.

Her hand trembled as she pointed out into the night, and the gusty winter's breath caught and whipped her calico skirts about her ankles. "You kin go!" she ordered, passionately. "Don't ye never cross this doorstep ag'in. Begone quick!" But Tamarack only laughed with easy insolence. "Sally," he drawled. "Thar's a-goin' ter be a dancin' party Christmas night over ter the Forks.
