The only gentlemen in the Islands are the Lairds, the Tacksmen, and the Ministers, who frequently improve their livings by becoming farmers. If the Tacksmen be banished, who will be left to impart knowledge, or impress civility?
There are but three considerable tacksmen on Col's part of the island : the rest is let to small tenants, some of whom pay so low a rent as four, three, or even two guineas.
