Ireland, as the most remote situation, would be especially inviting to the fugitives; and we can thus understand the story which is found in the Acts of St. Senanus, how fifty monks, "Romans born," sailed to Ireland to learn the Scriptures, and to lead a stricter life; and were distributed between St. Senan, St. Finnian, St. Brendan, St. Barry, and St. Kieran.

In 1823 the president and vice-prefect Señan, who had served as padre at this Mission for twenty-five years, died August 24, and was buried by the side of Santa María. After his death San Buenaventura began rapidly to decline. In 1822 a neophyte killed his wife for adultery.

"Laech-dich, son of Bresal, and his land, shall belong to the young boy bearing the satchel," said Patrick, "one of thy own people i.e., Mac Nisse of Condere and to one not born yet i.e., Senan of Inis-Altich. Thy merit in heaven will be illustrious." Saran's guilt it was that was here laid upon Bishop Olcan.

Senan or Senanus was an Irishman who came here some time in the sixth century. It is related of him that one day his mother was changing houses, and the youthful saint declined to help her; she was angry and poured some water over him. Even a saint may dislike house-moving or spring-cleaning. However, in this case the domestic articles very considerately moved of themselves.

Padre Altimira, one of the explorers, now wrote to the new padre presidente Señan explaining what he had done, and his reasons for so doing; stating that San Francisco could no longer exist, and that San Rafael was unable to subsist alone.

Sechnall, not only undisturbed, but full of joy, sang a glorious hymn in honor of Patrick, and immediately after died. Kynrecha came to the convent-door of St. Senan. "What have women in common with monks?" said the holy abbot. "We will not receive thee." "Before I leave this place," responded Kynrecha, "I offer this prayer to God, that my soul may leave the body." And she sank down and expired.

Patrick's cell, on the top of Croagh Patrick, the grandest mountain, perhaps, with the grandest outlook, in these British Isles, where stands still, I believe, an ancient wooden image, said to have belonged to St. Senan: such a bell as St. Fursey sent flying through the air to greet St.

"The green island in the west," said Patrick, "in the mouth of the sea; the lamp of the people of God shall come into it, who will be the head of counsel to this district i.e., Senan of Inis-Cathaigh six score years from this." He prophesied of Brenainn, son of Ua-Altae, who was to be born 120 years after, which was fulfilled. Derball, son of Aedh, opposed him.

There is still preserved at the Mission the first register, which was closed in 1809. At that time 2648 baptisms had been administered. There are four signatures which occur throughout in the following order: Pedro Benito Cambon, Francisco Dumetz, Vicente de Sta María, and José Señan. The largest population was 1330 in 1816. The largest number of cattle was 23,400 in the same year.
