The truth was, Roudin dared not tell what he knew. It was based wholly on a talk he had partly overheard between Barode Barouche and Luzanne in the house where she stayed and where he, Roudin, lodged. It had not been definite, and he had no proofs. He was a sensationalist, and he had had his hour and could say no more, because of Barode Barouche.

He did not become a sensationalist and advertise to preach on these subjects, but he brought in many helpful illustrations which the people recognized as valuable, and soon the meeting-house was filled with eager listeners.

"I think," answered Pan evasively, "that you are a sensationalist, a materialist, a sceptic, a revolutionist; and if you had not sought the assistance of a god, I should have said not much better than an atheist. I also think it is time I thought about some physic for you instead of metaphysics, which are bad for my head, and for your soul."

"If the right labels are on the right bottles. That's what I have to find out. And it's worth an occasional risk. . . . Sensationalist! I collect new emotions, but you must be bourgeois yourself if you want to épater le bourgeois. Now, you can't have had many emotions, or you wouldn't have written that play. And yet what were you doing before?" she demanded abruptly.

His French successors razed away the powers and derived them also from impressions received. As we have earlier noted, this notion was fostered by the new interest in education as method of social reform. Thus Helvetius, perhaps the most extreme and consistent sensationalist, proclaimed that education could do anything that it was omnipotent.

It is merely another form of the old sensationalist view of Knowledge, but we suggest that the conditions of the problem will readily appear in their true light and real nature whenever such inquirers realise the fact that our exertional activity is the source of our cognitions of the external, and that therefore our pure exertional activity is the source of the basal concepts of geometry.

"Probably," he suggested, with a little glance around, "about themselves. We will follow their example. Will you marry me, please, Miss Van Teyl?" "We haven't even come to the ice yet," she sighed, "and you pass from high politics to flagrant personalities. Are you a sensationalist, Mr. Lutchester?" "Not in the least," he protested.

For he had no certain means of showing that the potent energy of Nature was unitary and homogeneous. He is frequently described as a sensationalist, but such a view is certainly incorrect. This, however, may be admitted that he sought the essentials of Reality not in the Mind but in the Object.

The only safe course is to confine the term Sensation to the immediate data of the five senses touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste, with probably the addition of muscular and other internal feelings. It is in this sense that the word is usually employed, and has been employed by the Sensationalist School themselves.

Now I am going to make a rather startling announcement. "The past few years have promised a culmination which has been guessed at and yearned for since the beginning of time. It is within, and still without, the scope of metaphysics. Those of you who have attended my lectures have heard me call myself the material idealist. I am a mystic sensationalist.
