Though many of these verse-forms have refused to become indigenous in Germany, a large number of new words invented by Rückert have had poetical vogue, and even where the new formations were too bold or too recherché, they accustomed German ears to a new idea-presentation through sound.

But externally to ourselves, the distinction between repletion of Space and mutation of Space does not exist, for each is in constant transmutation, whatever is is filling and changing at the same time nothing is at a standstill," and to quote Ruckert: "The world has neither beginning nor end, in space nor in time. Everywhere is center and turning-point, and in a moment is eternity."

If we compare parables that come nearer to our modern point of view and are easily understood on account of their simplicity, like those of Ruckert or those of the New Testament, the difference can be clearly seen.

But too many of the poems are dedicated to her and too many inconsequential moods relating to her are recorded. In spite of this, Rückert has resolved the discord between every-day life and poetry with the simplest poetic apparatus. Rückert has also enriched the German language with a mass of gnomic poetry, to the writing of which he was led by his Oriental studies.

It was an excellent dinner; and, on the wings of the music Mrs. St John Deloraine was playing in the front drawing-room, two happy hours passed lightly over Barton and Margaret, into the backward, where all hours good and evil abide, remembered or forgotten. "Des ailes! des ailes! des ailes! Comme dans le chant de Ruckert." Théophile Gautier.

I would not give you a penny, she said, smiling; 'don't think there's any of it for you. 'Well, wench! I can nobbut say, Bless yo'! and bless yo'! and amen. 'A dull rotation, never at a stay, Yesterday's face twin image of to-day. COWPER. 'Of what each one should be, he sees the form and rule, And till he reach to that, his joy can ne'er be full. RUCKERT.

The universal necessity, and the universal feeling of disgrace, had seized upon the nation like something dæmonic; the inspiring fire which the poet might have kindled was already burning everywhere of its own accord. Still, I will not deny that Arndt, Körner, and Rückert, have had some effect."

To mention only a few examples of men who would scarcely be thought of in a professorial career, Schiller was Professor of History in Jena, Rückert Professor in Berlin, Uhland in Tübingen. In nothing can Germany manifest a better-grounded feeling of national pride than in this, its university system.

Rückert, like the average Romanticist, lacked moderation in his production, and was utterly without critical faculty in respect to his own verse. Much that he has written has perished, but some of his work both original and translation is a permanent part of the best of German lyric verse.

And, moreover, literary parallels are the ancestors of that undocile child, Conjecture. and so on. And as to the pronounced similarity of form, we must remember that Heine was here employing his favorite measure, while Loeben was almost the equal of Ruckert in regard to the number of verse and strophe forms he effectively and easily controlled.
