The Arabs will tell you that these springs come straight from the Euphrates, by an underground channel through which the great river flows beneath the Persian Gulf, doubtless being the same legend alluded to by Pliny when he says, 'Flumen per quod Euphratem emergere putant. There are many of them the Garsari well, Um-i-Shaun, Abu Zeidan, and the Adari, which last supplies many miles of date-groves through a canal of ancient workmanship.

In the metrical calendar of Oengus, the feast is assigned to the 3rd May, and in his Leabhar Breac, the scribe adds the Latin note, "Feir mar Muire et reliqua, i.e., inceptio ejus ut alii putant sed in februo mense vel in Martio facta est illa, quae post VII. menses nata est, ut innaratur vel quae libet alia feria ejus."

Obligantur, i.e. obligatos esse putant. Forma passiva ad modum medii verbi Graeci. Guen. Cf. note, 20: miscentur. Victus comis. The mode of life between host and guest is courteous. For victus==manner of life, cf. Cic. Inv. 1, 25, 35. XXII. E is not exactly equivalent here to a, nor does it mean simply after, but immediately on awaking out of sleep.

EXERCEAS: the subject is the indefinite 'you' equivalent to 'one', τις: 'unless one were to practise it'. So 28 nequeas; 33 requiras. Cf. also Plin. TARDIOR: 'unusually dull'; cf. Academ. 2, 97 Epicurus quem isti tardum putant. THEMISTOCLES: famed for his memory.

So our ancestors held in the northern woods, and Christianity, purifying and expanding their belief, fulfilled it with a new perfection.

This age wherein we live, in our part of the world at least, is grown so stupid, that not only the exercise, but the very imagination of virtue is defective, and seems to be no other but college jargon: "Virtutem verba putant, ut Lucum ligna:" "Quam vereri deberent, etiam si percipere non possent." Cicero, Tusc.

Aquinas likewise holdeth, that the consecration of a sacrament is not absolutely tied to a certain form of words. And so saith Conradus Vorstius, speaking of the eucharist. Sect. 1.
