The thornless horse-chestnut has in some instances such evident protuberances on the valves of its fruits, that it may seem doubtful whether it is a pure and stable variety. Systematic latency may betray itself in different ways, either by normal systematic marks, or by atavism.

Thus we have no less than eight kinds, all specifically differing from one another. The best known in museums, zoological collections, and pictures, is perhaps the Indian animal. It is the one marked by the singular foldings of its skin, thickly embellished with protuberances or knobs, that give it a shield-like appearance.

Now, it was a school of argonauts then voyaging on the surface of the ocean. We could count several hundred of them. They belonged to that species of argonaut covered with protuberances and exclusive to the seas near India. These graceful mollusks were swimming backward by means of their locomotive tubes, sucking water into these tubes and then expelling it.

As to the first sub-class, it gives several specimens of that singular looking fish appropriately called a 'seafrog, with large head, sometimes pierced with holes, sometimes swollen with protuberances, bristling with spikes, and covered with tubercles; it has irregular and hideous horns; its body and tail are covered with callosities; its sting makes a dangerous wound; it is both repugnant and horrible to look at."

When she shone out again, with a brilliancy increased by the contrast, I saw plainly on the path before me from around which at this spot the trees receded, leaving a small space of green sward the shadow of a large hand, with knotty joints and protuberances here and there. Especially I remarked, even in the midst of my fear, the bulbous points of the fingers.

When he got to the last strand, what his strong, powerful teeth had nearly accomplished, his rough, coarse tongue finished, for it was covered with thorn-like protuberances capable of scraping the flesh off an ox. There was a little snap, and Jinks was free. He had never wished to be free before, but the chicken had given him his wish for freedom, and he meant to have the chicken.

Our habitual plan is there; in fact, we find everything that we had expected; but all has been put together by some antecedent force that would seem to have crushed it, arrested it in the mould, and to have hindered its completion. The houses whose height must attain some four or five yards are the merest protuberances, that our two hands can cover.

Another cleft, also terminating at this crater, runs towards Arago and the more northerly of the protuberances. CAUCHY. A bright little crater, not more than 7 or 8 miles in diameter, on the W. side of the Mare Tranquilitatis, N.E. of Taruntius.

The long arms may be compared with the Persian title rendered in Latin by Longimanus and it is conceivable that the protuberances on the head may have been personal peculiarities of Gotama.

The cranium was abnormally shaped, reaching a great elevation at the summit, then sinking suddenly, then spreading forward to an enormous development at the temple just visible as he was then standing, and at the same time forming unusual protuberances behind the large and pointed ears. No one who knew the man could mistake his head, when even the least portion of it could be seen.
