The church, which stands about a mile from the Fosse Way to Ilchester, is modern, but the tower of the old church is left standing, and a piscina has been removed from it to the new building. Horner Valley, one of the many charming walks which abound in the neighbourhood of Porlock.

That the enterprise now resolved upon was far more dangerous than any hitherto attempted by me, needs no further proof than this: I went and made my will at Porlock, with a middling honest lawyer there; not that I had much to leave, but that none could say how far the farm, and all the farming stock, might depend on my disposition.

Every man who had ever been robbed, expected usury on his loss; the lords of the manors demanded the whole; and so did the King's Commissioner of revenue at Porlock; and so did the men who had fought our battle; while even the parsons, both Bowden and Powell, and another who had no parish in it, threatened us with the just wrath of the Church, unless each had tithes of the whole of it.

The chancel arch is unusually narrow. There is the base of an old cross in the churchyard. PORLOCK, a small town near the Devonshire border, 7 m. W. from Minehead, from which it is reached by coach. Its name "the enclosed harbour" indicates its former maritime character, but more than a mile of meadow land now separates it from the sea.

I know Porlock, the second curate here very well, and he tells me that his vicar has a wonderful faculty of finding appropriate work for every one. Of course you know him? 'No, I don't; said Nuttie. 'Miss Egremont has her appropriate work, said Mr. Dutton, and the deacon felt himself pushed into his old position at Micklethwayte.

And all the sons and daughters were there, excepting Lord Porlock, the eldest, who never met his father. The earl and Lord Porlock were not on terms, and indeed hated each other as only such fathers and such sons can hate. The Honourable George de Courcy was there with his bride, he having lately performed a manifest duty, in having married a young woman with money.

Humphrey, to throw a light upon who this man is whose body has been recognized by so many friends and patients of Dr. Lana as being that of the doctor himself. A Juryman: Has anyone up to now expressed any doubt about the matter? Mr. Porlock Carr: Not to my knowledge. Mr. Humphrey: We hope to make the matter clear. The Judge: Then the court adjourns until tomorrow.

"Who wouldn't sooner be the younger son of an earl than the eldest son of a plain squire?" said Frank, wishing to say something civil in return for his cousin's civility. "I wouldn't for one," said the Honourable John. "What chance have I? There's Porlock as strong as a horse; and then George comes next. And the governor's good for these twenty years."

'Ahoy, there! he shouted, leaning over the taffrail. 'What lugger is that? 'The Lucy, answered the mate, 'bound from Porlock Quay to Bristol with hides and tallow. Stand ready to tack! he added in a lower voice, 'the fog is coming down again. 'Ye have one of the hides with the horse still in it, cried the officer. 'Run down under our counter. We must have a closer look at ye.

'Jack, you shall never want a shilling while I am alive to give thee one. But what is it for, dear heart, dear heart? 'To buy something over at Porlock, mother. Perhaps I will tell you afterwards. If I tell not it will be for your good, and for the sake of the children. 'Bless the boy, one would think he was threescore years of age at least.
