The time of the nine-months' men was soon to expire and the Twenty-fifth Connecticut left very soon for New Orleans, but was detained at Donaldsonville for a few days. About fifty years ago the people in the North were probably in a frenzy of excitement. We soldiers in the South had learned to take things cool.

I am your most obedient servant, RICHARD PLATT, Aid-de-camp. TO GENERAL McDOUGALL. White Plains, January 29th, 1779. I had this day the favour of yours by Lieutenant Rost. Usually, rather than part with his livestock at a disadvantage, he keeps only a nine-months' supply of grain, and sells the rest. Then, in order to sustain life until the next harvest, he mixes birch-bark and tares with his flour for three months, if it has been a good year, and for six months if it has been bad, while in London they are eating biscuits made of his wheat.

At this point he was interrupted by the sounds of silvery footsteps on the stairs, and a party of wimin, carryin' guns and led by BETSY JANE, who brandish'd a loud and rattlin' umbereller, burst into the room. "Here," cried I, "are some nine-months wimin!" "Mrs. Ward," said the editor of the "Bugle" "Mrs. WARD and ladies, what means this extr'ord'n'ry demonstration?"
