Well; in the very scant notices of Chinese history I have been able to come on, two events mark this date; or rather, one marks 165, and the other 166. To take the latter first: we saw that at a momentous point in Roman history, in the year of Nerva's accession, 96, China tried to discover Rome. In 166 Rome actually succeeded in discovering China.

Nerva's reign was short, but he was succeeded by one of the best of the Roman Emperors, Trajan, a prince under whose just, impartial and strong rule, a man of Pliny's character was bound to thrive and pass from office to office.

Moreover, Apollonius is known to have taken part in the politics of the empire; and his words, if he used them, might be prompted by his knowledge, or by his furtherance, of some attempt upon Domitian's life. Apollonius was at this time busily engaged in promoting Nerva's interests among the Ionians.

He likewise erected a new temple in the Capitol to Jupiter Custos, and a forum, which is now called Nerva's , as also the temple of the Flavian family , a stadium , an odeum , and a naumachia ; out of the stone dug from which, the sides of the Circus Maximus, which had been burnt down, were rebuilt. VI. He undertook several expeditions, some from choice, and some from necessity.

Scevinus, when he heard this, broke the ivory cane which he had in his hand, and said, "May the evil fall on this stick! I shall be with Tigellinus to-day, and later at Nerva's feast. Thou, too, wilt be there? In every case till we meet in the amphitheatre, where the last of the Christians will appear the day after tomorrow. Till we meet!" "After to-morrow!" repeated Petronius, when alone.

Possibly he had taken measures before Nerva's death to secure the revenge which Nerva craved, but probably did not live to see. In his dealings with the mutinous prætorians the strength of the new emperor's hand was shown at once. He ordered a portion of the force to Germany. They did not venture to disobey, and were distributed among the legions there.

"There is no time to lose. Ahenobarbus will need me really in Achæa; hence he may count with me." And he determined to try the last means. In fact, at Nerva's feast Cæsar himself asked that Petronius recline opposite, for he wished to speak with the arbiter about Achæa and the cities in which he might appear with hopes of the greatest success. He cared most for the Athenians, whom he feared.

Actually we went out together shortly after sunrise, down the Subura, through Nerva's Forum, and diagonally across the Forum itself. There I quaked, for fear of being recognized; and marvelled at the coolness of Maternus. He feasted his eyes and mind on the gorgeousness about us, but with such discretion that no one could have conjectured that he was a foreigner, viewing Rome for the first time.
