Fitly arranged, it gives a bright relief to the superb beauty of the Cardinal-Flowers, the brilliant blue-purple of the Vervain, the pearl-white of the Life-Everlasting, the delicate lilac of the Monkey-Flower, the soft pink and white of the Spiraeas, for the white yet lingers, all surrounded by trailing wreaths of blossoming Clematis.

Around Cloudy Pass we found the red monkey-flower. In different places there was the wild parsnip; the ginger-plant, with its heart-shaped leaf and blossom, buried in the leaf-mould, its crushed leaves redolent of ginger; masses of yellow violets, twinflowers, ox-eye daisies, and sweet-in-death, which is sold on the streets in the West as we sell sweet lavender.

Mingled with these grow, lower, the spiraeas, white and pink, yellow touch-me-not, fresh white arrowhead, bright blue vervain and skullcap, dull snakehead, gay monkey-flower, coarse eupatoriums, milk-weeds, golden-rods, asters, thistles, and a host beside.

"But one July, two years after her death, a patch of gold appeared on the marsh below the hedge a patch of the monkey-flower. Some seeds had been blown thither, or carried down by the stream. "Next July the patch had doubled its length. "'The flowers are travelling towards me, said M. Benest. "And year by year the stream brought them nearer.

Long before I learnt the name's meaning, in the days when I trod the lower road with slate and satchel, this spot was a favourite of mine but chiefly in July, when the monkey-flower was out, and the marsh aflame with it. There was a spell in that yellow blossom with the wicked blood-red spots, that held me its mere slave. Also the finest grew in desperate places.

There was a dank smell of wet wood and rankly growing water-weeds. A ray of sunshine, piercing the roof of willow leaves, struck the single blossom of a monkey-flower, that sparkled suddenly in the green darkness like a topaz.
