Borrow was soon able to transcribe the Manchu characters with greater facility and speed than he could English. Among the more peaceful developments of Mongol rule at this epoch may be mentioned the introduction of a written character for the Mongol language. Other cities now began to tender a voluntary submission, and many Chinese took to shaving the head and wearing the queue, in acknowledgment of their allegiance to the Manchus.
