Her mother had not touched it all day had gone off and left it. "This is a little too much!" Una said, grimly. The only signs of life were Mrs. Golden's pack of cards for solitaire, her worn, brown Morris-chair, and accretions of the cheap magazines with pretty-girl covers which Mrs. Golden ransacked for love-stories. No wonder that as a body they seem to be getting bankrupt in imagination; they appear to be in the position of a cook who is never allowed to handle anything but sweets. The state of things is rather curious. It may be often asserted truthfully of the West End theatres that there are as many love-stories as playhouses.

To the unlucky women whom he loved he was astonishingly brutal; he forced Miss Walkenshaw the lady of whom he became enamoured in Scotland to leave him by his cruelty; he forced his unhappy wife, the Countess of Albany, to leave him for the same reason. Her love affair with the poet Alfieri is one of the famous love-stories of the world.
