It has not so marked a preference for trees as its little relatives just mentioned, but likes, so far as my observation goes, to flit about in thickets, where it remains in hiding until driven from its covert or drawn forth by curiosity. Only for a moment does it appear in sight, then plunges into another covert.

I know another man who walks away out into the country every Sunday: not that he likes the country he wouldn't recognize a bumble bee if he saw it but he claims that if he walks on Sunday his head is as clear as a bell for work on Monday. Against work itself, I say nothing. But I sometimes wonder if I stand alone in this thing. Am I the only person left who hates it? Nor is work all. Take food.

"Don't be in a hurry," said Cord to Vronsky, "and remember one thing: don't hold her in at the fences, and don't urge her on; let her go as she likes." "All right, all right," said Vronsky, taking the reins. "If you can, lead the race; but don't lose heart till the last minute, even if you're behind."

So long as they had Plenty of Work and plenty of Something to eat, and somebody else's cast-off clothes to wear, they were content! And they were proud of it. They gloried in it. They agreed and assured each other that the good things of life were not intended for the 'Likes of them', or their children.

He constantly reminded himself how often woman gives through a sense of duty or through fear of alienating or wounding one she respects and likes; and, so he saw in each impulse to enter Eden boldly a temptation to him to trespass, a temptation to her to mask her real feelings and suffer it.

She will not 'be under obligations. Perhaps, even, she likes her strange profession; perhaps she finds the delight of battle, that you know so well, in pitting her wits against the brains of the mighty; perhaps she has a cynic soul that finds a savage joy in running down the faults of the seemingly faultless running them to earth and taking her profit therefrom.

Which the court would rather see 'em go to rack an' ruin for nothing, than let 'em to an honest woman as would pay the rent punctual, and make her penny out of 'em, and nobody none the worse. And to sell them, the price is two thousand pounds, and if I had it I'd give it this minit. But where are the likes of you and me to get two thousand pounds?

'Amy likes it; but decidedly I should never have known myself. 'Ah, said his wife 'Could some fay the giftie gie us, To see ourselves as others see us. 'As far as the sun-burnt visage is concerned, the glass does that every morning. 'Yes, but you don't look at yourself exactly as you do at a painted window, said Amy, in her demure way.

"And I think he will be able to plan a house to satisfy Mr. and Mrs. Haselford. It's just the kind of work he likes." "Mother, when they leave Rotherwood, shall we have to let it to any one else, or would it be possible " Ingred hesitated, with the wish that for nearly a year she had put resolutely away from her trembling on her lips. "To go back there ourselves?" finished Mother.

Civilization, the world's office-manager, tells us to work like fiends all day and be lonely and respectable all evening, and not even marry till we're thirty, because we can't afford to! That's all right for them as likes to become nice varnished desks, but not for me! I'm going to hunger and thirst and satisfy my appetites even if it makes me selfish as the devil.
