As alert as his predecessor was immobile, an untiring hunter, a bold rider, sitting his horse with the grace of a young man, a kindly talker, an affable sovereign, this survivor of the court of Versailles, this familiar of the Petit-Trianon, this friend of Marie Antoinette, of the Princess of Lamballe, of the Duchess of Polignac, of the Duke of Lauzun, of the Prince de Ligne, preserved, despite his devotedness, a great social prestige.

When the time comes, the Master of events, adjusting them in prescribed lines, reaches by stern obligation the avoidless conclusion. Consulting no law but his own will, the Marquis de Ligne had lived as though he were the autocrat of fate itself instead of one of its servants, and therefore was surprised when the venerable playwright prepared the unexpected dénouement.

The only letters in the whole collection that have been published are those from the Prince de Ligne and from Count Koenig. Casanova tells us in his Memoirs that, during his later years at Dux, he had only been able to 'hinder black melancholy from devouring his poor existence, or sending him out of his mind, by writing ten or twelve hours a day.

Lambert to Westminster Abbey, where we saw Dr. But, Lord! at their going out, how people did most of them look upon them as strange creatures, and few with any kind of love or respect. 6th. Col. Slingsby and I at the office getting a catch ready for the Prince de Ligne to carry his things away to-day, who is now going home again.

In the absence of proof, I am unwilling to charge his Highness de Ligne with such an action; and indeed am little careful to be acquainted with the individual who did it, who could and would do it.

Lieutenant Boelke on January 13, 1916, shot down a British aeroplane, as did also Lieutenant Immelmann one northeast of Tourcoing and the other near Bapaume. Both were decorated with the Order of Pour-le-Mérite by the emperor. A third British aeroplane was shot down in an aerial fight near Roubaix, and a fourth was brought down by German defense guns near Ligne, northwest of Lille.

Caroline smiled, and said she recollected her father's telling her that "the Prince de Ligne, the most agreeable man of his day, declared that his secret depended, not on his wit or talents for conversation, but on his power of concealing the ennui he felt in stupid company." "Well, my dear, I tell you so, as well as the Prince de Ligne, and let me see that you benefit by it to-morrow."

Eye-witness is the young Prince de Ligne, now Captain in an Austrian Regiment of Foot; and standing here in this perilous posture, having been called in as part of the Reserve. He says: "Cry had risen for the Reserve," in which was my regiment, "and that it must come on as fast as possible," to Leuthen, west of us yonder. "We ran what we could run.

This mitigation of the form of punishment gave but little consolation to the great body of petitioners, who had been anxious for the pardon of the youth: it was looked upon as all-important, however, by the Prince de Ligne, who, as has been before observed, was exquisitely alive to the dignity of his family. The Bishop of Bayeux and the Marquis de Crequi visited the unfortunate youth in prison.

"A fallen angel!" commented Susan. "Good! Charming!" cried the marquis, clapping his withered hands. "Miss Duran, the Marquis de Ligne has requested the pleasure of meeting you." She flashed a smile at him. He bent over her hand; held it a moment in his icy grasp. "The pleasure," said Susan, prettily, not shirking the ordeal, "is mine."
