I have just been re-reading Donald's first letter to me the one in which he frankly warned me of the hardships which would be mine to face, if I should attempt to carry out my plan. It was, I think, the only time that he was ever wrong ... no, I had forgotten that afternoon at Judd's still.

I have given this passage from Mr Judd's paper because there exists a good deal of misapprehension amongst English travellers as to what has really been done with regard to the geological survey of Austro-Hungary. A ride through Szeklerland Warnings about robbers Büksad A look at the sulphur deposits on Mount Büdos A lonely lake An invitation to Tusnad.

Yes, he was leaning forward and his lips were opening, but no sound came. Slowly his eyes wandered around at the waiting people in the trees, on the roofs and the fence and then they dropped to old Judd's and blazed their appeal for a sign.

"There's something queer about the folks at Bigbee's," Mary Louise confided to Irene, as she went to her friend's room to assist her in preparing for bed. "Agatha Lord kept looking at that velvet ribbon around your neck, to-night, as if she couldn't keep her eyes off it, and this afternoon she seemed scared by the news of Sarah Judd's arrival and wasn't happy until she had seen her.

I do not know any more truly realistic pictures of certain aspects of New England life than are to be found in Judd's "Margaret," wherein are depicted exceedingly pinched and ignoble social conditions. Yet the characters and the life are drawn with the artistic purity of Flaxman's illustrations of Homer. Another example is Thomas Hardy's "Far from the Madding Crowd."

I believe it will please the Morrisons better than for us to send her away, and it surely won't hurt Hannah to be a lady of leisure for a month or so." And so Sarah Judd's fate was decided. She prepared their Sunday morning breakfast and cooked it quite skillfully.

From what has happened in the past it is clear that no place on the western side of the mountain is entirely safe from devastation by floods of lava; while the prevalent winds tend to carry the ashes and lapilli, which are hurled into the air, in the same westerly direction. For an excellent view of this remarkable volcanic group see Judd's Volcanoes, 4th edition, p. 43.

Uncle Judd wants ye!" She came quite close to him now. "You said you'd do it I know what you've done you " she looked as if she would fly at his throat, and Dave, amazed, shrank back a step. "Go home, I tell ye Uncle Judd's shot. Git on the hoss!"

Judd's mouth retained the straight line for some time, but a quick burst of light-hearted song on Smiles' lips, as she turned to dish up the savory stew, showed that the incident was forgotten by her as soon as it was ended. "Better let me lift it down for you," said Donald, as she swung the crane with its heavy iron kettle from the fire. "We don't want any more burns here to-night."

I say this with the names of all the Bostonian group, and those they influenced, in mind, and with a full sense of their greatness. It may be ungracious to say that they have left no heirs to their peculiar greatness; but it would be foolish to say that they left an estate where they had none to bequeath. One cannot take account of such a fantasy as Judd's Margaret.
