No matter what happened to him afterwards, Don Luis was now furiously bent on getting the young engineers off on the lonely mountain trail where Gato and his comrades were lying in wait for the two young Americans. "I shall have no more questions for you, for the present," Senor Honda replied. "Just now I wish to have some conversation with these Americans."

The governor of Bonista was discovered guilty of so much corruption in office that he died, while serving a sentence in prison. Pedro Gato became an avowed outlaw. Senor Honda, while acting for the government in Bonista, sent the troops in pursuit of the outlaw. He was caught and shot by the soldiers.

A blockade, dated April 22nd, was declared of the north coast of Cuba, from Cardenas on the east to Bahia Honda, west of Havana, and of the port of Cienfuegos on the south side of the island.

The authorities were by no means helpful, and the engineer was driven to an old expedient with the object of overcoming this difficulty. “We endeavour all we can,” he says, in one of his letters, “to make ourselves popular, and this we find most effectually accomplished by ‘regaling the venal beasts.’” He also gave a ball at Mariquita, which passed off with éclat, the governor from Honda, with a host of friends, honouring it with their presence.

"You are very welcome, senor," said Don Luis, holding out his hand, which the other accepted. Then the stranger swept his glance over the others grouped on the porch. "These are your American visitors?" inquired Honda. "Yes," nodded Don Luis. "We will withdraw if you two gentlemen have business to discuss," suggested Mr. Haynes. "I beg that all of you gentlemen will remain," urged Senor Honda.

Of course I offered myself; and Togo was good enough to appoint me to the Totomi Maru, a small craft of some nineteen hundred tons, under a splendid fellow named Honda. "We left here at noon of the 2nd, escorted by the gunboats Akagi and Chokai, the second, third, fourth, and fifth destroyer divisions, and the ninth, tenth, and fourteenth torpedo-boat flotillas.

The Havannah is well defended, and its works rival those of the most important fortified towns of Europe; the Torreones, and the fortifications of Cogimar, Jaruco, Matanzas, Mariel, Bahia Honda, Batabano, Xagua and Trinidad might resist for a considerable time the assaults of an enemy; but on the other hand two-thirds of the island are almost without defence, and could scarcely be protected by the best gun-boats.

On April 22 I proclaimed a blockade of the north coast of Cuba, including ports on said coast between Cardenas and Bahia Honda, and the port of Cienfuegos, on the south coast of Cuba, and on the 23d I called for volunteers to execute the purpose of the resolution.

"Then if you hold a commission in the state of Bonista," replied Don Luis Monte; "you must represent my very good friend, his excellency, the governor of this state." "Just at present the governor of Bonista is in difficulties," hinted Senor Manuel Honda. "How?" demanded Don Luis. "Yes; in difficulties," continued the visitor.

It is that of Santa Fée de Bogota; a fertile plain estimated at 1600 toises, almost about two miles above the level of the sea; and which pours its water into the valley of the Madelena about a degree above Honda, which is mentioned by M. Bouguer as giving so fine an example of those water-worn rocks.
