High-priced professors from the University of Leipzig and the École des Hautes Études are engaged to drill our teams to victory. Men who should have long ago taken their Ph.D. have been known deliberately to flunk examinations so as to be eligible for the 'varsity contests. Promising students in the preparatory schools are bribed to enroll with this or that college.

The only breaching battery that has as yet opened fire is that established in the Parc aux Princes, at 400 metres distance from the ramparts. It directs its fire against the enceinte at Auteuil, where the gates and the drawbridge have been destroyed. The Fort of Montrouge is almost surrounded by the troops, who advance also by means of trenches towards the Redoubt of Hautes Bruyères.

"La Grune," growled one of the keen-eyed watchers, and was discounted at once by doubtful growls from the rest. Then a black ledge loomed through the mist and faded again before they had more than a glimpse of it. "Les Dents," ventured one. "Hautes Boues," so divergent were their views. A sound of waters and another dark loom of rock. "Sercul," said one. "L'Etac," said another.

All passenger and goods trains leaving Paris have to stop outside the walls for examination. Trains contravening this order will not be permitted to proceed. Possessors of petroleum are to declare the amount they hold to the authorities within 48 hours. Fort Montrouge is still held, and is strongly supported by the Hautes Bruyères.

Auber came up flushed with delight at my success, and said to Rossini, "Did I say too much about Madame Moulton's voice?" "Not enough," replied Rossini.

This diploma of higher studies, analogous to that of the École des hautes études, the brevet of the École des chartes, and the doctorate in philosophy at the German universities, is given to those students of history who, qualified by a certain academical standing, have passed an examination in which the principal tests are, besides questions on the "sciences" auxiliary to historical research, the composition and the defence of an original monograph.

But the old antagonism between the École des hautes études and the École des chartes on the one hand, and the Faculties on the other, has disappeared. All these institutions, lately so dissimilar, will henceforth co-operate for the purpose of carrying on a common work in a common spirit.
