The ladies answered that they were noble and were on a pilgrimage to Santiago; their names were Leonora and Guiomar de la Vega; the former was married and accompanied by her husband; the latter was a widow. The king-at-arms then requested their gloves to be kept as a pledge until some knight should ransom them. Frances Davio, an Aragonese knight, immediately offered to do combat for the ladies.

Don Juan de Ovalle. Dona Guiomar de Ulloa was now in her native place, Ciudad Toro. The Mass was said by Gaspar Daza. See infra, section 18; Reforma, i. c. xlvi. section 3.

Whoever has seen a flock of pigeons feeding tranquilly in the field, and has marked the fear and confusion with which they take flight at the terrible sound of the gun, may picture to himself the fluttering dismay of the dancers at the unexpected news blurted out by Guiomar. Off they ran in all directions, leaving the musico in the lurch, and in a pitiable state of perplexity.

Doña Guiomar, who heard all this, told her husband that the terrors he was inflicting on Don Juan were excessive, and begged he would moderate them, lest they should cost him his life.

"Let us go," said Leonora; "but let Guiomar remain here on the watch, to warn vis if Carrizales wakes." "Ay," said Guiomar, "black woman stay, white woman go: God pardon all." Leaving the negress behind, the rest all went to the saloon, where they seated themselves on a rich carpet, with Loaysa in the centre of the group.

GUIOMAR. "Speak! What are you?" RUTILIO. "Gracious woman, hear me. I am a stranger: And in that I answer all your demands." Custom of the Country. Eugenie replaced the curtain. And scarcely had she done so ere the steps in the outer room entered the chamber where she stood. Her servant was accompanied by two officers of the police.

"Alas, señor mio," said Preciosa, "he is neither a gipsy nor a thief, although he has killed a man, but then it was one who had wounded his honour, and he could not do less than show who he was, and kill him." "What! he is not a gipsy, my child?" said Doña Guiomar.

Andrew was then removed to a room where there was no one but Doña Guiomar, the corregidor, Preciosa, and two servants of the family. But when Preciosa saw Don Juan in chains, his face all bloodless, and his eyes dimmed with recent weeping, her heart sank within her, and she clutched her mother's arm for support.

At the east end is a great reredos given by Ayres and containing figures of himself and of his wife Dona Guiomar de Castro, while opening from the north side of the nave is a beautiful domed chapel built by Dona Antonia de Vilhena as a tomb-house for her husband, Diogo da Silva, who died in 1556. In it also lies his elder brother Lourenço, seventh lord of Vagos.

I saw, too, how scanty were our means; and yet I believed our Lord would order these things by other ways, and be gracious unto us. See ch. v. section 14, ch. vi. section 1. Ch. xxxi. section 3. This was said by Maria de Ocampo, niece of St. Ch. xxiv. section 5. Dona Guiomar de Ulloa. Ch. xxxiii. section 8. Francis de Salcedo. Ch. xxiii. section 6. Gaspar Daza. See ch. xxiii. section 6.
