The preparations for a War usually occupy several months; the assembly of an Army at its principal positions requires generally the formation of depôts and magazines, and long marches, the object of which can be guessed soon enough. It therefore rarely happens that one State surprises another by a War, or by the direction which it gives the mass of its forces.

Albano gazed into the groping, timid face, and guessed all her blindness had returned! The mother rushed up. "May God bring you retribution for this!" cried Albano to her. "Farewell, unhappy Liana!" For many days Albano lived without love or hope, in bitter self-reproach; every recollection darted into him a scorpion-sting.

She was fair enough, in her sweet girlish beauty and innocence, to have been a poet's or an artist's inspiration. The mother's eyes grew very dim as she looked at her child, but she never guessed that there had been more than the stir of surprise in her heart that day that she was "sleeping for sorrow." It was twilight in the room when Lucia woke.

A loud whistle answered our call, and 500 metres below us we saw a man who was shouting his hardest to make us hear. As we were very close to a little station, we easily guessed that this man was the station-master. "Where are we?" cried Louis Godard through his horn. "At in in ille!" answered the station-master. It was impossible to understand.

"Goin' to visit some of the great folks," Abel said to himself. "Wonder who it is." Then to the Doctor, "Anybody get sick at Sprowles's? They say Deacon Soper had a fit, after eatin' some o' their frozen victuals." The Doctor smiled. He guessed the Deacon would do well enough. He was only going to ride over to the Dudley mansion-house.

But Miss Lucretia was content to wait, and guessed at many things which Cynthia did not tell her, and made some personal effort, unknown to Cynthia, to find out other things. It will be said that she had designs on the girl.

"Our fur, which is used in making hats, is highly esteemed," said the Lady Ondatra stiffly, "and our flesh, though musky, of such excellent flavour that the natives prefer us to Wild Duck." Phil guessed that she was hurt, and did his best to soothe her by admiring her babies. No mother could have resisted this.

One must have guessed that the children belonged to him, for he lived like a stranger among them. He never called them his sons, but the Duke of Burgundy, the Duc d'Anjou, the Duc de Berri; and they, in turn, always called him Monseigneur.

How long must he stay there? For months at least. He should be thankful that he was there; thankful that there was such a place, where no one came and where he could remain until he was forgotten. He was thankful, of course he was. But what a life to live! He wondered what Atkins thought of him; how much the lightkeeper guessed concerning his identity and his story.

Your second question, why did I go away so mysteriously, is surely not necessary. You guessed why, didn't you? 'No, I never once guessed, she said simply; 'nor did Charles, nor did anybody as far as I know. 'Well, indeed! Now think it over again, and then look at me, and say if you can't guess? She looked him in the face with an inquiring smile.
