Sulla had not only deprived the children of the proscribed of all their estates, but had also debarred them from aspiring to any political office see Velleius Paterculus, ii, 28. In spite of the cruelties of the time, the real life of England went on and was scarcely even checked in its advance to better things. See Roessler, Kaiserin Mathilde, 287 ff. William of Malmesbury, sec. 497. See the Athenaeum, February 6, 1904, p. 177. But see Lot, Fideles ou Vassaux , 205-212.

Layamon's statement that he "read books" at Arnley is interpreted to mean that he read the services in the church. Hājji Khalīfa, however, is clear and detailed in his account of the visit. For an account of Stambol and the old Seraglio see the Story of Turkey, 260 ff.

All the more surprising is it that it receives no mention from Vasari, who merely states that the master worked at Castelfranco. Statius: Theb. iv. 730 ff. See p. 135. Aen. viii. 306-348. Fry: Giovanni Bellini, p. 39. ii. 214.

Peculiars were doubtless most subject to abuses, as being often exempt from the oversight and corrective discipline of the diocesan. Offenders sometimes fled to these for protection. Cf. Blomefield, Hist. of Norfolk, iii, 557. On the scandalous neglect of duty of some holders of peculiars see Dean of York's Visit., 199, 201 ff., 324, et passim. See also Mr.

Hymn to Demeter, l. 2 ff. The translation is mainly from Pater, Greek Studies.

See Breasted, Zeitschrift fur Aegyptische Sprache, XXXIX, pp. 39 ff., and History of Egypt, pp. 356 ff. This series of sculptures shared the deliberate mutilation that all her records suffered at the hands of Thothmes III after her death, but enough of the scenes and their accompanying text has survived to render the detailed interpretation of the myth quite certain.
