The Marienkirche, which stands, as I have said, behind the Stadt-haus, is well worth a visit. Its two towers are 408 feet in height; a very elaborate belfry rises from the roof at the point of intersection of the transept.

The glass of the white-curtained windows, and the varnished woodwork of the door at which I knocked, glittered so intolerably that they hurt the eyes, and made one envy the Chaperon her blue glasses. It was a relief when the dazzling door flew back to disclose a dim interior, and a delightful old lady in a lace-covered gold helmet, a black dress, and an elaborate apron.

To which the artist answered, laughing, "Even criminals under sentence have, at least, the privilege of going to their prisons reluctantly." So they went down from the mountains, reverently and reluctantly. Yee Kee, with the more elaborate equipment of the camp, was sent on ahead by wagon. The two men, with Croesus packed for a one night halt, and Czar, would follow.

There were those who favored the north side for the location. Others favored the south side. After considerable discussion the south side was chosen. At one of the meetings, Thomas Hastings did quick work with his pencil, outlining his idea of what the tower should be. Later, he submitted an elaborate plan. It was rejected. A second plan was rejected, too. The third was accepted.

Such a costume, and the elaborate arrangement of the laurels in their hats, dilate their hearts, by giving to them openly a personal connexion with the great news in which already they have the general interest of patriotism. That great national sentiment surmounts and quells all sense of ordinary distinctions.

The little mongrel now seemed to hold a second and more elaborate conference with the Irish setter. Possibly he conveyed his opinion of the latter's character, for the proud-plumed tail drooped disconsolately, and the loud-mouthed threatenings ceased.

"We ask the patient for a statement of his belief, which he is only too glad to give with elaborate and vivid details. We meet every statement with an emphatic mental denial. The patient, being in the belief of false conditions, is of one mind with the world, and so reflects the beliefs of mankind.

"There are so many things you don't understand, Sir George," said T. X. tartly, "that I despair of ever cataloguing them." "You are an insolent cub," growled his Chief. "Come to lunch." "Where will you take me?" asked T. X. cautiously. "To my club." "I'm sorry," said the other, with elaborate politeness, "I have lunched once at your club. Need I say more?"

"And yet, father," Klea calmly replied, "I feel perfectly guiltless, and perhaps in the same fearful situation you might not have acted differently." "You think so you dare to believe such a thing?" stormed the old man. "And if the key and perhaps even the lock have been stolen, and if I have done all that beautiful and elaborate work in vain?"

The "Hebrides" overture was the fruit of this tour, one of the most powerful and characteristic of his minor compositions. This theme was afterward worked out in the elaborate overture. We will not follow him in his various travels through France and Italy.
