No one who has not studied the character of the German gentleman the old-fashioned Edelmann will readily understand how directly he feels himself injured by the disgrace of a relative even very distantly removed.

A writer much cited in this same essay, Richard of Bury, derived his name from his birthplace, Bury St. Edmunds.

In fact, an edelmann or nobleman, in the German sense, is strictly what we mean by a born gentleman; with this one only difference, that, whereas, with us, the rank which denominates a man such passes off by shades so insensible, and almost infinite, into the ranks below, that it becomes impossible to assign it any strict demarkation or lines of separation; on the contrary, the continental noble points to certain fixed barriers, in the shape of privileges, which divide him, per saltum, from those who are below his own order.
The works of Edelmann, who attacked the inspiration of the Bible, were burned in various cities, and he was forced to seek Fredericks protection at Berlin. Bahrdt was more aggressive than any other writer of the time. Originally a preacher, it was by slow degrees that he moved away from the orthodox faith. His translation of the New Testament cut short his ecclesiastical career.
