I wanted to have the book bound immediately, but at the shops they told me there was no time; I was walking along with my operas under my arm in the vicinity of the Plaza de las Descalzas when in the back wall of a convent I caught sight of a tiny bookbinder's shop, like a cave with steps leading down.
It stood in a street which boasted only one number the number 2. I believe the street was, and still is, called the Calle de la Misericordia. Marti set up ovens in the old building by the Church of the Descalzas, and the business began to yield fabulous profits.

If the weather was fine, those shining lights of the Urbs Augustan culture bent their steps, still enveloped in the indispensable cloak, toward the promenade called the Paseo de las Descalzas, which was formed by a double row of consumptive-looking elms and some withered bushes of broom.
