In 1515, more than five hundred persons are said to have suffered capitally for the crime of witchcraft in the city of Geneva in the course of three months. In 1524, one thousand persons were burned on this accusation in the territory of Como, and one hundred per annum for several year after. Danaeus commences his Dialogue of Witches with this observation.
One inquisitor, Remigius, took great credit to himself for having, during fifteen years, convicted and burned nine hundred. In France, about the year 1520, fires for the execution of witches blazed in almost every town. Danaeus, in his "Dialogues of Witches," says they were so numerous that it would be next to impossible to tell the number of them.
Dies Christo dicatos tollendos existimo judicoque, saith Danaeus quotidie nobis in evangelii proedicatione nascitur, circumciditur, moritur, resurgit Christus.
A notable testimony of Junius we have already cited. Danaeus will not allow princes by themselves to make laws about ecclesiastical rites, but this he will have done by a synod. This decree of the ecclesiastical synod shall the godly and supreme magistrate afterward confirm, stablish, and ratify by his edict.” Joh.
