LETTER CXVIII. JAMES MADISON, October 2, 1785 JAMES MADISON, of William and Mary College. Paris, October 2, 1785. Dear Sir, I have duly received your favor of April the 10th, by Mr. Mazzei. You therein speak of a new method of raising water by steam, which you suppose will come into general use.

'The Lord is my strength and song, and He is become my salvation.... EXODUS xv. 2. These words occur three times in the Bible: here, in Isaiah xii. 2, and in Psalm cxviii. 14. I. The lessons from the various instances of their occurrence. The first and second teach that the Mosaic deliverance is a picture- prophecy of the redemption in Christ. 'As we have heard, so have we seen.

Consult the Annotations of Vatablus, and of Ainsworth, an English writer, upon Psal. cxviii. 19, 20; also Constantine L’Empereur, Annot. in Cod. Middoth, cap. 2, p. 44, 45; Cornelius Bertramus, Of the Commonwealth of the Hebrews, cap. 7; Henry Vorstius, Animadvers. in Pirk. Rab. Eliezer, p. 169.

You would much better come to Magny's where you would find me alone, or with Plauchut, or with friends who are also yours. I embrace you. I received today the letter which you wrote to me at Nohant. G. Sand CXVIII. TO GUSTAVE FLAUBERT Paris, 18 May, 1869 I saw Levy today, I tested him at first; I saw that he would not give up his contract at any price.

I; Rev. i. 10; Psalms cxviii. 24; Lev. xxiii. 7, 11; Mark xv. 8; Psalms lxxxiv. 10, in which Christmas is called Anti-christ's masse, and those Masse-mongers and Papists who observe it, etc.

As, for instance, in Psalm cxviii. 22, "The stone which the builders refused is become the head-stone of the corner," which, Clarke says, "seems to have been originally spoken of David, who was at first rejected by the Jewish rulers, but was afterwards chosen by the Lord to be the great ruler of his people in Israel;" and in Isaiah xxviii. 16, "Behold, I lay in Zion, for a foundation, a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner-stone, a sure foundation," which clearly refers to the promised Messiah.

There are some of them which it is impossible to understand without attention to this dramatic method of rehearsal. Psalm cxviii., for instance, includes several speakers. Psalm xxiv. was composed on the occasion of the transfer of the ark to the tabernacle on Mount Zion. And David, we read, and all the house of Israel, brought up the ark with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet.

On the same plate we see in figure 7 a Sun column from Tyre, upon which we see the Crescent and disc in conjunction as in the last case, but without the cross. On Plate CXVIII. we have in figure 8 a cut of a fine vase from Melos ornamented with a Svastika cross. Upon Plate CXXXIII. we have, in figures I to 4, representations of a sacred Boeotian chest or ark.

CXVIII. To BISHOP GEDDES, EDINBURGH. ELLISLAND, 3rd Feb. 1789.

The Church therefore numbers the Rosary amongst her most efficacious prayers, and she has endowed it richly with indulgences to induce the faithful to say it frequently. "Unless thy law had been my meditation, I had then perhaps perished in my abjection." Ps. cxviii, 92. Dear Brethren: In our former considerations of the Rosary we have discussed the prayers of which the Rosary is composed.
